   1-B1 David Boyle- Born 1 May 1842, Greenock, Scotland. Baptised 8 May 1842. 
He was the founding father of modern archaeology in Ontario and Eastern Canada 
due to his interest in past Indian occupations in Ontario. 1856, settled with 
parents in Elora, Ont (father became the village blacksmith).
   1857-60, apprenticed as a blacksmith in Eden Mills, Wellington County, Ont 
(5 miles from Guelph), under uncle Andrew (1-F). 1864, graduated from Elora 
Grammer School. 1865-71, school teacher, Middlebrook Public School- one room 
school house a few miles west of Elora, Ont. ? 1867, where ? married Martha S. 
Franklin (1-B1*). 1871-81, Principal of Elora Public School. His collection of 
rocks and Indian artefacts along the Grand River in Elora started his interest 
in archaeology. Helped revive the Elora Mechanic's Institute (museum). Formed 
the Elora School Museum, Elora Natural History Society. 1881-83, Canada 
Publishing Co., Toronto- on editorial team for "Royal Canadian Readers" 
(Ontario school textbook). 1883-88, owned and operated store- "Ye Olde Booke 
Shoppe and Natural Science Exchange", 353 Yonge St., Toronto (below Gerrard, 
opposite Elm). 1884-96, Curator-Archaeologist of the Canadian Institute Museum 
on Richmond St., Toronto. 1887-1908, established the journal "Annual 
Archaeological Reports for Ontario". Founding member of the American 
Anthropological Association. 1896, wrote "History of Scarboro". 1896-1901, 
Curator of the Archaeological Section of the Ontario Provincial Museum (in the 
Toronto Normal School building). 1901-11, Superintendent of the Ontario 
Provincial Museum. These collections were transferred in 1933 to the David 
Boyle Room of the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. 1906, produced the first 
archaeological map of Ontario. 1908, suffered stroke. 1909, Doctor of Laws, 
University of Toronto. Res 1888: 316 Berkeley St, Toronto. Res 1905: 78 Walker 
Ave, Toronto. Died 14 Feb 1911, Toronto, Ont. Buried Mount Pleasant Cemetery, 
Toronto. Archaeological plaque erected by the Ontario Heritage Foundation in 
front of the Elora Public Library, 28 Nov 1976. David Boyle's letters and 
papers housed in the Ethnology Department, Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto. For
