About Pasdeloup Press

The Pasdeloup Press is located in Stratford, Ontario, Canada, and publishes a limited number of high-quality books of poetry, prose, and artists' biographies. Currently available titles are listed on the left. Clicking the book cover will provide more information on each title. (Note: This information appears in pop-up windows.)

The press was established in Chicago in the 1960s, by author/illustrator Virgil Burnett. “Pasdeloup” was a bandit in a Gothic tale which he was trying to write, and when this story came to nothing, Pasdeloup was pressed into service as a printer. (An art historian thought Pasdeloup a very clever title for a South Side press. She claimed that Burnett had devised it as a code name meaning “not in the Loop,” which was ingenious but mistaken.)

Burnett learned the trade of bookmaking in Paris, under the tutelage of master printer and publisher Maurice Darantiere, who taught him about books — not texts but books themselves, physical objects that supported texts, particularly poetry. (Although Darantiere preferred poetry, his most famous publication was a novel: James Joyce’s Ulysses, which he produced in Dijon when no one in the English-speaking world would touch it.) In the early 1970s Burnett and Pasdeloup moved to Canada, where its mandate expanded to include books about art and the artists who produce it, such as painters David Hill and Edward Melcarth. General works of fiction are included in the Pasdeloup list.
