The Millennium Biosphere concept was developed for the purpose of planning a contingency to preserve a remnant of earth-kind (people, animal, plants, etc.), in the event that a quantum series of negative environmental shifts occur on the planet.
These "shifts" are believed to be occurring now as the result of human interference in biome and atmospheric systems and natural processes that result from this interference.
In the event that severe degradation of earth biomes continues, due to human industrialization, then artificial biomes would have to be created based on computer models, to preserve a wide range of earth species during a dormant period, when the natural earth would be allowed to restore itself to a balanced state, possibly with minimal positive interference from man.
In the general context of the city wide biosphere proposed initially at this web site, the basic concepts for a self contained man made biosphere are forwarded with knowledge acquired from the fields of human factors, architecture, engineering, and general sciences.
Coincidentally or not, the dimensions for this design parallel those of the millennium Jerusalem described at the end of Ezekiel and Revelations, in the Holy Bible.
Because this biosphere project is of such proportion as to require vast funding (approximately 400 billion dollars) it must be seen at this stage as conceptual in the understanding as to what would be required in a Noah's Ark type scenario to preserve earth species in the event of severe atmospheric and environmental degradation.
The degradation referred to would be likely caused by one or more of the following:
A. Massive conflict. (Nuclear or Conventional)
B. Severe Infrastructure Failure causing disease or biome contamination.
C. Climatic shifts causing B.
D. Industrial Proliferation resulting in B or C.
E. Natural catastrophes seen or unforeseen such as severe earthquake/volcano activity or celestial body impact.
To address the planning for a biosphere designed to withstand the above scenarios, an initial biosphere layout was devised which would accommodate the preservation of 150,000 persons along with associated presence of a wide range of plant and animal species.
The most ideal biosphere city footprint was found to be 6750 by 6750 feet or 4500 by 4500 furlongs.
All the designed structures within this area support the concept of meaningful living by 150,000 persons in a relatively confined yet accommodating space which amounts to an exotic earth/space "ship".
Within this earth/space ship would be a full range of services and institutions. In a modified form the earth/space ship design would incorporate an advanced gravity drive system in the foundation which would allow relocation of the biosphere.
The period of dormant reconstitution of the earth's environment (after a tribulation period foreseen as currently in progress and in the near future), would be approximately 200 years.
After this period, the earth would be repopulated by an exponential progression to a peak population of 5 billion persons or less.
Further population progressions may take place by far reaching space travel invoking possibly some exotic form of space/time folding, to populate other planets in other parts of the galaxy.
The concepts for the construction of the millennium biosphere are presented below:
