Master Goro Hatakeyama was born on August 17, 1928 in Tokyo. He started kendo at the age of thirteen while attending primary school. At the age of thirty, he was introduced to Master Yoshio Sugino (10th dan) in Kawasaki, and soon became his student and first assistant. At that time, he regurlarly travelled to the hombu dojo in Katori to initiate himself to Kobudo. Today, Master Goro Hatakeyama holds the rank of 9th dan in Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu, the oldest martial tradition in Japan. The teaching given in this school has remained unchanged since the 15th century.
