Master Yoshio Sugino was born on December 12, 1904 in Chiba. At the age of twelve, he took on the study of martial arts through the practice of kendo under Master Shingai Saneatsu, former samurai and one of the initiators of the kendo reform. He moved on to study judo under the firm guidance of Master Iisuka Kanisaburo who warmly recommended him to Master Kano. The latter sent him to Master Ueshiba to learn the art of Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu. Master Yoshio Sugino then undertook the study of Katori Shinto Ryu under the direction of Masters Tamai, Ito and Kuboki, and particularly Shiina. In 1981, the International Martial Arts Federation recommended him for the rank of 10th dan in his art.. Master Yoshio Sugino was one of the last great masters of the Katori Shinto Ryu, who had also mastered numerous other disciplines.
