This book will take the reader on an historical journey.  Its pages are filled with the lives and spirits of the people who make up the vital mosaic of the Mackenzie River basin, its delta and hinterland.  With them the reader will visit those faraway places long abandoned to the arctic winds; travel on the waters of the great mackenzie and meet the caribou herds along the Dempster Highway; go by car on the network of ice roads connecting the Delta settlements and sail with the whalers and explorers on their ventures onto the arctic seas; taste the flavor of the "Trail of '98" as it follows the Chilkoot and White Pass Trails through the Yukon; meet Inuit and Dene and Metis people as they struggle to understand the way of the White Man.

This book is far from being a complete history of the Mackenzie - it is not meant to be.  Its contents represent an overview of the past so that the present can be experienced and appreciated more fully.  The many photographs,  maps, and original poetry not only enhance the Author's clear prose style,  but also provide the reader with a personal view of this most enchanting area of wild Canadian north country. It is factual and comprehensive enough, though, to have been used as a text book in the cultural inclusion program of the NWT schools.

It is hoped that the reader, whether a casual traveler or life-long resident of the north, will be stimulated to read and research further into this most fascinating heritage of a remote part of Canada.
