Various Artists "American Gigolo - The Best of International Deejay Gigolo Records"
Mixed and Compiled by Tiga
Turbo MARCD00182

The electro or electro clash sound taking keyboard riffs, patches, melodies and vocals from 80's new wave and recycling them for the new millennium receives an anchoring with this collection from Montreal's uber DJ, Tiga. International Deejay Gigolos is the Munich based record label run by techno legend DJ Hell. This collection takes the highlights of six years of releases and catalogues the early explorations of electro clash. The highlights include the unreleased Linda Lamb "Hot Room" (Tiga Remix), Tiga & Zyntherius "Sunglasses At Night", Filippo Naughty Moscatello "Communicate" (Classic Mix), Vitalic "You Prefer Cocaine", System F featuring Marc Almond (the voice of 80's Soft Cell) "Soul On Soul" (The Hacker Remix), Miss Kittin And The Hacker "Stock Exchange" and David Carretta "Metal Disco Class".

Paul E.Lopes "Whatnaut:House"
Virgin 72438 12667 2 4

THIS IS THE SUMMER'S MUST BUY!!

Thank you Virgin Music Canada! A collection from Toronto's master of soulful grooves has been long overdue. Saying it is worth the wait hardly seems to make up for the 10 years that his selection talent has been absent from our retail shelves. Any regular of Carlos Mondesir's Hot Stepper Productions gigs and the infamous Bump 'n Hustle events, that are the cornerstone of soulful house and garage in Toronto, will tell you that Paul E.Lopes is a master of the Lazy Dog style and was around long before Ben Watt decided to extend his Everything But The Girl activities into Sunday night house parties in London England...Paul E.Lopes opens up with the golden vocal talents of Ivana Santilli; (herself somewhat absent from the scene since her stunning debut album "Brown" and the dancefloor classic "If I Ever Fall (Part 2)" duet with Glenn Lewis); the new production by Augusta is a cover of the 70s disco cut "Feeling So Good" by Montreal native Francine McGee and is fresh and soulful. Paul E.Lopes conjures up flavours in "Whatnaut:House" that recall an evening out with Dimitri from Paris and the album is so rich it's hard to pick favourites, master cuts include Erro "Change For Me"  (Joey Negro's Club Mix), New Sector Movements "The Sun" (Kenny Dope Main Remix), Nick Holder & Sirius "The Magic Carpet Ride", Restless Soul featuring Valerie Etienne "Beautiful" and ADNY presents Clear Vision "You Are My Light".

Chris Sheppard "Euphoria 2 - Deep, Dark & Underground"
BMG 74321 92583 2

Last summer's first Euphoria collection from Chris Sheppard delivered on its promise and was a well rounded collection of break out underground grooves and perfectly matched the range and musical style of my programming for Galaxie Dance and it by the end of the year it took the #2 position in my top 3 album picks for the Galaxie Christmas buyers guide. Perhaps sales were not as Chris and BMG expected, but this year's version lacks the context that the first one attained. It's hard to consider the Top 40 friendly tracks "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" Aquagen, "Rapture" Iio, "Be Angeled" Jam & Spoon and "Omnibus" Laut Sprecher as being "deep, dark & underground". There are enough banging Galaxie Dance favourites to make the album worth buying and the highlights include Kosheen "Catch" (Gordon Kaye Vocal Remix), Faithless "Muhammad Ali" (Full Intention Club Mix), Warp Brothers "Blast The Speakers", Network 25 "DJ" (Newcumer Mix), Dirt Devils "The Drill" (Evacuation Mix), Rinocerose "Music Kills Me" and Timo Maas "To Get Down".

Various Artists "Nice One"
Nice + Smooth  0011

The cover says: "the nice+smooth ultramedia sampler featuring over 70 minutes of the best deep-house, drum n' bass and downtempo grooves". It's right! Canada's own nice+smooth gives a perfect introduction to their stunning stable of DJs and producers, all Galaxie Dance regulars and favourites. Highlights include Teknostep "NexTune", DJ Shine "First Snow", Kinder Atom "Ladies", Teknostep "Solid St8 (Electohm)", Stuhr/Moonraker "Organic Love", Visionary feat. Teknostep "Music For Short Attention Spans"
Nice + Smooth  0009

This and the previous review owe their presence to the ongoing power of television. I saw Teknostep as a guest on Electric Circus (MuchMusic) promoting this album release and I sought out nice + smooth and they sent me this and the "nice one" sampler. This is a great album, especially if you like an electronic fusion incorporating elements of techno, house and nu-soul. The production is great and fresh with stand out tracks including "Troubleclef", "Nextune", "Feeling", "Stressed Out" (Teknostep's 8 to 6 remix), "Needing Love", "Kingdom Come" and "Spiritual Forces".

X-Press 2 "Muzikizum"
Skint/Sony  CK 886652

This has been a cult record on the DJ circuit since the 6 LP box set was available on import earlier this year - thanks Matt C for being the first to turn me on to it!. The X-Press 2 boxed set came out around the same time as Danny Tenaglia's boxed set for his album "Back To Basics" (see the recent reviews section) and was finally released here in June. I have been a big fan of X-Press 2 since their Junior Boys Own debut in the UK and power tracks like the 1996 release "Tranz Euro Xpress". The pairing with David Byrne "Lazy" that has propelled this album to international success is a gorgeous, albeit laidback, track and it's not exactly typical of what you would expect from X-Press 2. My big beat favourites from this album are: the title cut "Muzikizum", "Supasong", the underground friendly "Smoke Machine" and "AC/DC", and the superb "I Want You Back", featuring the vocal talents of Dieter Meier of the Swiss electronic team, Yello.
