Common questions about working with Beth Mares

What is your approach? I am an integrative psychotherapist, and I use all the main methods as required. I start by asking about the client's goals and then assess what method or combination of methods will be most effective to reach them. See Assessment, review, & information. I assist people with personal growth, self-awareness, coping skills, managing stress, human relations and personal problems. For more information about my approach, see below, and also see Beth's approach to psychotherapy,  psychotherapy FAQ,   more therapy FAQ,   psychotherapy for depression  and couple counselling.

Do you just listen and not say much?  I adapt my approach to the requirements of the individual client. Most clients need me to engage with them.

Do you give practical advice? When I think it is appropriate. In some cases giving advice discourages the client from taking charge of his/her own decisions; and some clients already know all about the practical stuff, and require a different type of psychotherapy.

Do you refuse to estimate the number of sessions the client will need, like other therapists I have asked? No, but I understand their reticence. Even with all the experience I have, it is impossible to be sure, especially after just one session. Sometimes I have thought something would take several months and it took only a few sessions; and the other way around. But when it is important to the client to get an idea of the time frame I give an educated guess, and most of the time I am in the ballpark.

Have you done psychotherapy yourself? Yes. This is a requirement for clinical membership in the Ontario Society of Psychotherapists. In depth personal psychotherapy also forms an integral part of an analytical training, which I have done.

Do you find this type of work draining? Not at all. I find it very satisfying--and always interesting. Despite all the things human beings have in common, and all the similar patterns I see, every assignment is unique. I can understand that someone who works for an agency or who works long hours because of heavy expenses could be less enthusiastic due to overwork. I am fortunate to be able to take just the amount and type of work that I enjoy.

Do you work with people who are suicidal?  Many people have thoughts about suicide when they are depressed, and I work with them. However, I do not work with people who are seriously contemplating suicide or who make threats of suicide. I recommend that such people ask their doctor for a referral to a psychiatric facility which has the resources to look after them.

How long is your therapy "hour"?  55 minutes.

Do you charge for the session if the client is unable to give 24 hours notice of cancellation?  Yes.

If I cannot make a session but am available for a phone session at that time, can I do that instead? Yes, when phone sessions are not contra-indicated for the type of work you are doing, assuming there are no logistical problems.

Do you have a sliding scale? No. One of the purposes of the Resources section is to assist people who cannot afford my services.

Do you work weekends? No. If you need a weekend, see Ingrid Dresher's page, Couples counsellor, West Toronto and Etobicoke.

Are you married yourself? Yes, I am married to Mike Mares, without whose forethought and help I would not have this website.
