Phone counselling is not clinical counselling,
and is not suitable for someone who is unstable or for working with psychiatric
conditions such as severe depression, bipolar disorder, or a potentially life-threatening
eating disorder.
However, recent research has suggested that for mild or moderate
depression
phone counselling
is superior, because most depressed people, especially if
they have other health issues, lack energy, and the drop-out rate for
in-office therapy is high. It seems reasonable that the same would apply to
other distance methods such as IM.
