Five 1976 Mercury Grand Monarch Ghias

After looking for two years we finally found an owner of a 1976 Mercury Grand Monarch Ghia in Portland, California, USA. VIN 6W37H527519. Aftermarket trunk rack, V8-351 engine, 4-door, lacy aluminum styled wheels, dual remote mirrors, hydro-boost power 4-wheel disk brakes, and red exterior. The vinyl-padded roof was in shreds and the owner had to sand and paint the roof black with texture paint (looks better than a shredded roof). The wheels are the original cast-aluminum spoked ones with the red centers. According to the owner, the tail lights are all red -- the amber color was replaced with red and with the mercury emblem back on, the rear lights now look Euro.

In June 2008, there was a 1976 Mercury Grand Monarch Ghia for sale in Athens, Greece. The VIN is 6W37H547583 and the previous owner had driven it in Canada. The current mileage is 137k and the body was recently resprayed. The last time it was driven the water pump leaked so the owner decided not to put the engine at risk and he parked it till he found the part. Unfortunately, he passed away due to sudden illness. The car appears to be very well cared for with no rust or any patched-up work. The interior is almost perfect:

"Mercury-Benz" look-alike by Bob Tasca

After Ford introduced the Granada-Monarch line in the 1970s, Bob Tasca who owns a tiny Lincoln-Mercury dealership in Seekonk, Massachusetts saw an opportunity to modify a Monarch and market a Mercedes-Benz look-alike, at one third the price of the real thing. He added Mercedes-Benz like hub caps, a "250 LM" signature on the trunk lid and a Mercedes-Benz like hood ornament to a Monarch. He also mounted the radio antenna in a rear fender, changed the trunk lock over to a Lincoln cover, and pin-striped the bottom of the car. He sold 40 of these "Mercury-Benz" cars a month.

If anyone has a picture or heard about these "Mercury-Benz" cars, please let Benjamin know. I found this story in the marketing book, You Will Be Satisfied, by Bob Tasca, Harper-Collins Publishers, $14.95 USD, 209 pages. Bob Tasca is the father of the Mustang Cobra Jet. In 1967, Ford built the production Mustang Cobra Jet based on Tasca Ford's KR-8 Mustang - short for "King of the Road in 1968". Check out the Mustang 428 Cobra Jet Registry
