Guidelines and Metrics for Information Visualization Design

Design

The range of possible representations for an information visualization is endless. However, some visualizations are much more effective than others. Since 1993, I have been thoroughly involved in the design and development of many visualizations. Over time, I was interested in learning from our past work in order to better understand our successes, help educate new people and collect expert knowledge.

Thesis

My thesis for my Masters of Computer Science at University of Toronto brought together guidelines, metrics and case studies: EFFECTIVE INFORMATION VISUALIZATION: Guidelines and Metrics for 3D Interactive Representations of Business Data

Papers

A number of peer reviewed papers have been published. Some of these are directly related to my thesis, with more recent papers focusing on areas such as design methods and aesthetics.

Articles

In addition, there have been assorted articles in trade magazines and presentations for conferences. For example:

New Papers and Current Research

I have some papers in progress on other ideas: design metaphors and historic design sources.

Current areas of interest are many, including topics such as visualizing massive timeseries, web-distributed visualization for marketing objectives, mechanical/artistic information visualizations.
