Jo hn Muir, famed American environmentalist who spent a lot of his life in Yosemite, also spent a few years in Ontario exploring the area around Meaford. Possibly in Canada to avoid the military, Muir wandered the area, studying the natural environment. In a swamp he found a rare "Calypso Orchid", which he described as one of the two greatest experinces of his life. The period in Ontario was a formative period in which he began to develop his ideas.
