Chasing Profits in a Changing World

"For too many years, we have not paid attention to the methods of physical
distribution," writes Eric Peters, vice-president of client and market relations
for Tompkins Associates, Inc., in his paper called Streamlining Your Logistics Process.

Melissa Gracey, a logistics management consultant in partnership with her sister,
Cynthia Pryor, of Toronto-based DTA Services Limited, agrees. She says a study
of the logistics process reveals a number of ways companies can still strip away
inefficiencies that compromise their productivity. She points to one area of opportunity
where DTA finds most problems in distribution occur: Communications.

"We often have to act as the communicator to the department because the
purchasing people don't talk to the traffic people, and the traffic people don't
