Logistics Reveille
by Bonnie Toews
Logistics saves lives. But,
at present, the United Nations is incapable of
providing adequate logistics support
to its various peacekeeping missions
around the world. Major General
Lewis Mackenzie, now retired, woke up
delegates attending the breakfast
session at CALM's 28th Annual Conference
with this warning.
Commanders like him, he began, normally
have the luxury of taking logistics
for granted, as long as everything
goes well. "Unfortunately, most military
operations over the last couple
of years of any significance worldwide have
been UN operations. And the UN doesn't
know logistics. It's knitted together
each time after the crisis starts."
Lester Pearson did not introduce
peacekeeping as a solution to the Suez Crisis
in 1956 because Canada likes to
help people, he went on to clarify. "No one had
more to lose in the Suez Crisis
than Canada. If the superpower confrontation
that was growing between the Soviet
Union and the United States actually came
down to war, that war would be fought
over Halifax ... and Toronto ... and
Winnipeg ... and Vancouver ... that's
where the missiles would meet. It would be
Canada, from that moment until today,
that would provide the battleground."
