"Suffer the Children"

by Bonnie Toews

"Nothing is more tragic than the death of a child. When
it is the result of murder or suicide, it is absolutely
devastating, especially to parents, family and friends.
But, when multiple killings erupt in a community school,
the impact is even more staggering. This is why terri-
fying pictures flooding television screens and newspaper
pages on the day of the Columbine High School massacre
woke people up to the issue of school violence in both the
United States and Canada.

"So why has behaviour in schools on both sides of the border
degenerated into such violence? Alan Bell, a security con-
sultant and president of the Globe Risk Institute, looks at
society and the media for the answer.

"The root cause is bullying. He says, 'If a kid in the hallway
doesn't like the way another kid looks at him, he waits for
him outside, and he and his buddies beat the kid up. Un-
fortunately, this is part and parcel of what kids are exposed
to in video games and violence on television and in the
movies.'"
