"The Sleuth that NEVER Sleeps"

by Bonnie Toews

"When you walk into a bank, most likely the first thing
you see is a picture of you on a mounted TV screen
walking in the entrance. But in some banks, it is
difficult--if not impossible--to spot the actual video
camera, even when you look up to the spot where you
estimate the camera should be.

"Video cameras are the 'eyes' or automated 'snoops'
of any detection system, and people are accustomed
to seeing them installed up high, especially in malls,
says Jack Gin, president and director of operations
for Extreme CCTV Surveillance Systems in Burnaaby,
British Columbia. 'The camera is always looking down
on you.'

"A picture taken from that angle, however, ends up
catching only the top of a perpetrator's head rather
than getting a full view view of his or her face, so
cameras today are getting smaller and smaller--so
small in fact, they can be hidden on walls behind
plates that look like light switches. At that height,
the intruder is in full view of the camera."
