The Warehouse Sleuth
by Bonnie Toews
When he first walked into
his client's warehouse, he didn't feel comfortable.
But he didn't know why. Listening
to his gut, he donned his deer stalker hat and
told his client, "One trick I've
learned is to walk around the outside of a facility
during off hours. Why don't you
try it?"
That night, the plant manager followed
his advice and stopped at the factory
on his way home from the theater.
To his surprise, he found company product,
which was still in the factory carton,
in the dumpster. He removed the product
from the carton and put in some
bricks, along with a note that said: "We know
who you are, and we know what you're
doing. Don't come back."
The next day only four of the plant manager's warehouse staff were left.
Not every example is as dramatic
as this one, says consultant Robert Footlik,
president of Footlik & Associates,
but, he contends, "You don't need a lot of
money to make your operation more
efficient. You just need to think like a
detective and question everything
that's going on."
