Just in case anyone wanted to send condolences to the US and was unable to sign one of the books available in the bigger cities, there is an electronic book of condolences on the web at
http://commemoration.gc.ca/11sept2001/index.cfm?lang=EN
The site states "Please note that messages of condolence will be accepted until 11:59PM(EDT), Friday, September 21, 2001. After this time, it will no longer be possible to send messages to this site. However, all posted messages will remain on the site for viewing over the next few months."
There are donations being accepted at many firehalls in Ontario.
As if we needed anymore proof of how infinitely stupid and evil human beings can be after this week's events, Muslim, Arab and Sikh communities in North America are reporting a huge increase in the number of incidents of harrassment, assaults, and vandalism. The Western Centre for Islamic Studies in London was vandalised two days after the attack.
I guess some people are pretty pissed off about terrorists targeting innocent people of a certain nationality just because they don't like their leaders, so... they decided to retaliate by targeting innocent people of a certain nationality just because they look like the terrorists. I'm sure it makes sense to them somehow.
Not only that, but a few days ago in Hamilton some idiots, after vandalising a mosque, burned down a HINDU TEMPLE that was near it. I guess all "them darkies" look the same to them.
Many local mosques and Muslim schools are accepting donations to send to the US to help out, and would probably appreciate a show of support as well. Apparently some non-Muslim women in London will be wearing the hijab in a show of solidarity. I'm considering it but am not sure if this would be seen as a show of support or appropriation of a symbol that is supposed to also mean acceptance of a way of life. We'll see.
Anyone who had friends, colleagues or relatives in the New York area, or knows of others who do, CNN has a site devoted to those still missing.
http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/trade.center/missing/
They also have partial victim lists.

Peace.

"But now", says the Once-ler, "Now that you're here,
The word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear.
UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot
Nothing is going to get better. It's not."
