Bovine Designs was established by Ulf Stahmer in 1992 to whimsically explore the art of hand printing by combining the ancient and the modern: the Vandercook SP15 letter press and the Mac. With a background in silkscreening, fine art, engineering (four patents!) and a strong interest in design, Ulf has participated annually in the handmade book festivals Wayzgoose (Grimsby, Ontario) and Bartholomewtide (Queenston, Ontario).
1998 was an eventful year for Bovine Designs with the publication of the limited edition Foot for Thought, the first handmade pop-up book for Bovine Designs. In addition, the first series of Christmas cards was finished (Bovine Designs books and cards are printed on Canadian made acid free paper).
1999 was an action packed year behind the scenes. This Wep Page received a major face-lift and many prototype pop-up cards were developed, the first of which should be appearing on this site soon.
All works are hand printed using a Vandercook SP15 Letter Press.
