Teardrop

Teardrop

The teardrop trailer is was constructed to move the trikes to various rides and races. I used a trailer frame that I had and replaced the leaf springs with a torsion unit. The floor is 3/4" plywood with 1/2" for the front and sides with two layers of 1/4" plywood for the roof. I wanted a clean look to the interior. I used polyurethene glue for the bonding of the wood. The lamination top turned out really well. When I removed a section for the top hatch I didn't find any voids in the lamination. A wedge of pine was glued into the inner side and upper joints. This allowed material to be removed from the outside edges to form a rounded surface. The inside joints were tapped with 1-1/2"oz fiberglass mat with polyester resin. The exterior joints were planed out 1/16" deep x 4" wide. A single layer of fiberglass was laid in this area and a layer of the same was laid on the side to top joints. A single layer of 1-1/2oz mat was laid over the entire outside of the trailer. I rolled in nylon into the laminate. This holds the strands of mat down and the resin and mat form a uniform surface. I incorperated a channel into the rear hatch area to drain water away. I installed a trailer hitch for an extra bike rack.It also holds the table mount and umbrella. I painted it to match the FJ.

The upper hatch and tailgate are made of rectangular and box tubing. The tailgate has an aluminum checkerplate covering on the exterior. The hatch a F/G covering. I formed the bends in a hydraulic hand press. The hinges were made from stainless steel that I had lying around. I oversized the mounting holes and filled with thickened epoxy. The bolt holes were drilled down the centre of the epoxy and if there is any leakage the water won't be able to seep into the wood. Most teardrops had a single rear hatch and a galley. I wanted a tailgate so I could leave it in the down position if i had something long to move. I don't need a galley as I want the trailer to move the trikes around. I added a 24" round table made of fiberglass. My friend gave me an umbrella to add extra shade. The floor and interior sides and roof are carpeted. The trikes will travel in style. The side door is F/G again with S/S hinges.
