The Thunder Bay option

Richmond Hill, Ont. -- In deciding where Toronto Transit Commission subway cars should be built, it is helpful to assess our values (Bombardier Subway Deal Clears Hurdle -- Aug. 31).

Do we build the cars in China, courtesy of workers whose pay pales in comparison with their Ontario counterparts, and try to save $100-million? Or do we employ hundreds of people in Thunder Bay and further hone manufacturing expertise in the province?

The eventual end of cheap oil will halt the now rampant practice of running container ships, packed with finished goods, to Canada from the Far East. Let's hope that, when that day arrives, Ontario will still have some semblance of a manufacturing base.
