When Sheila Copps promised in 1993 to resign if the GST were kept, by definition she committed taxpayers to spending thousands of dollars on the by-election that would ensue if she had to honour her pledge. †Ms. Copps recently dug herself an even deeper hole by saying that she would not quit, as to do so would induce by-election costs.
Ms. Copps was right to resign. I now invite Ms. Copps to stick with her idea of sparing taxpayers by-election expenses by promising to cover all or part of the upcoming vote in her riding. Letís give Ms. Copps another chance to match words with deeds.
