Paying to throw away makes sense

The editorial and Town of Georgina are right on the mark: make us pay to throw away garbage. Some people still "just can't be bothered" to recycle or compost.

 

Our society cannot afford such an attitude. Folks would think differently if there were a direct cost for what they throw away. The pay to throw away approach is tried and tested.

 

For instance, in Hamburg, Germany, residents have been paying by the kilogram for waste removal.


Detractors of attaching direct costs to waste removal often predict that people will "orphan" their garbage away from their own home. This should not be a big issue any more, given there is so little vacant land left in Richmond Hill.
