An inhumane tradition
I’ve long since grown weary of Calgary Stampede proponents such as CEO
Vern Kimball fobbing off the manhandling of calves and other unwitting animals
as being part of local culture and tradition (Stayin’ In The Saddle – July 12).
I also take issue with Mr. Kimball suggesting that those of us who abhor the
heavy-handed treatment of animals, especially for the so-called amusement of
people, are an interest group with a “different agenda.”
Would the calf-roping cowboys be willing to replace the calves with
their own children or the family dog? Of course not, and I will continue to
boycott the Stampede and its sponsors for however long this unseemly
distinction is perpetuated.
