OLYMPIANS ! Which Masters have been in the Olympics ?

I found some of these Olympians, but Peter McKinnon has led me to 4 more,
while Roy Howard Smith has been a great help in founding more, and providing
details. Mark Sandilands has also been in the hunt, and also Pat Niblett.
Let's not forget Dave Ellis.

- Melissa Collins YMCA was on the 2000 and 2004 water polo team
- Fiona Wildy YMCA swam the 100 fly for Autralia in 1988
- Bev Tucker TYMS (deceased) was on the 1952 demonstration synchro swimming team
- Alison Korn NEPEAN won a silver medal in cycling in 1996
- Duncan Cleworth AURO swam the 400 IM for GBR in 1976

Nadine ROLLAND swam prelims of the 50 freestyle.
In April 2004 she swam at the US Masters meet (50 fly).
In October at Brossard, broke 4 WRs as a 25-29.
50 free 26.13 - 50 fly 27.88 - 100 IM 1:04.77

1996:

Steven CLARKE, free and fly. Swam a relay leg at the 2001 Ont Chsps

Riley MANTS - 200 Breast (may have been in other events)
Swam at US Master Natls. (ref Roy H Smith).

Leigh GARVIE. Exception to the rules. Not a competitor, but a member of the
physio support team (1988: figure skating, X-country, diving, weightlifing,
1992: diving, weightlifting, 1996: slalom canoe/kayak
2000: slalom canoe/kayak, synchro !)  That's a total of 5 Games.
Today Leigh Garvie swims with EMSC in the 45-49 age group.
Last year swam 1:15.3, 2:46, 5:52, 12:24, 23:28, 1:29 bk, 3:12 bk.
She placed 16th overall. We can be proud of her.

Alison KORN NEPEAN won a silver medal in cycling in 1996.
Also involved in rowing.


1992:

Mark TEWKSBURY
won Gold at Barcelona 100 backstroke.
Long and succesful career on the National team and previous Olympics.
After his retirement stayed out of the water for several years.
Dipped back in Nov 2004 swimming 50 bk as a first relay-leg (29.25).
Broke 35-39 LC NR 1:01.80 Mtl Aug 06.

1988:

Kathy BALD - 1988 Seoul
Lead off the 4 X 100 Free Canadian Team
Now swimming as Kathy Renard and achieving very fast free and brst times.

Lori MELIEN. Alberta. Swam backstroke leg of bronze-winning medley
relay. Very good results achieved in 2000  

Jon CLEVELAND, 1988 and 1992 breast, made one appearance in masters,
gaining 2 records (1:06.91 br). 

Sean MURPHY. A backstroke Commonwealth record holder. Now swims for
the Olympic Club in San Francisco. Still holds many world records in 30-34
long course age group.  (ref P. McKinnon)

Gary ANDERSON  1988 & 1992 Back & IM
Swam at 2003 SC US Masters Natls (ref Roy H Smith).
Gary Anderson: born in Montreal in 1969. Joined Pte Claire. In 1978, moved
to Toronto and swam for Etobicoke. Later coached by Paul Bergen.
Won a total of eight Canadian Championships in Back and IM.
Gary's first Olympic Games appearance was at Seoul, Korea in 1988 where he
placed eighth in the 200m Individual Medley final.
He duplicated this achievement four years later in Barcelona, Spain.
At the 1990 CWG at Auckland, New Zealand, won Gold for the 200m Backstroke
and 200m IM and Silver in the 100m Backstroke.

Alex BAUMANN:
Double gold at Los Angeles (200 and 400 IM).
Proposed by Laura Young because he was the first coach of Laurentian
Masters (formerly Olympic Gold Masters)

Swam Masters in 2009 at age 45 for TECH.
Broke 5 NRs and 1 WR (2:12.01 IM).


Marco VEILLEUX, brst. Came back in late 90's.
Breaking national and provincial records, 2006.

Ken FITZPATRICK, 200 br. Captain of the '84 Olympic swimming team.
He swam for Lethbridge MSC in 1996 and set the provincial record for 50BR

Simon DESCHAMPS, water polo. Swam at the 1988 Quebec provincials.
Swam 25.60 free LC for second place.

Gord VANTOL, water-polo.
Nepean has an Olympian swimming with us.
 Gord VanTol (45-49 age group) played on the
 1984 Canadian Olympic Waterpolo team.

Eva-Marie HAKANSSON, 1980 and 1984, breast for Sweden, now swimming 40-44
for DDO. Holds 6 NR's  

Graham WELBOURN, 1980 team. Holds 6 NR's from late 80's, incl a 16'42 1500

Dan THOMPSON, 1980 team. Holds 6 NR's, incl 57.5 fly in 88

Benoit CLEMENT, 1980 free. Holds 3 NR's from 89. (4:03 400 !)

Bruce BERGER, 1980 back. Swam a NR in late 80's, since broken.

Bill SAWCHUK. 1980 team. Once held the SC 200 IM WR.
Swam at the 2003 Natl meet in MTL for TAS, Team Aquatic Supplies.

Andy RITCHIE, 400 im, swimming for Thunder Bay, set 40-44 IM NR in 99

Paul NAISBY, breast for GB. Set many records in the 80's

Cheryl GIBSON, im. Swam masters in 85 and 98, breaking records each time.
Currently holds 6 NR's  

George GROSS Jr, water polo. Set several NR's in early 90's.

Gail AMUNDRUD, free. Ottawa. Set 3 Canadian records 30-34 at Van May 88.
(50 free 27.74, 100 free 1:00.67, 400 free 4:56.61)

Lisa BORSHOLT, brst. 2 NR's set in 1988.

Michael KER, free. Holds 3 NR's from late 90's

Bruce ROGERS, fly. Swam some meets in late 80's, holds 2 records.

Dave HEINBUCH, brst. Dave swam 200 breast at the 76 Montreal Olympics
but was eliminated from the finals. In Apr 83 Dave Heinbuch set the MSO
25-29 100 breast record at 1:10.94.  (ref Roy Smith)

Jill QUIRK. Was an alternate on the relay team. Suffered from  mononucleosis
just a few months prior to the games.  She didn't swim, but was on the team
and wears an Olympic ring. Currently holds 6 NR's at 45-49, incl a 1:02.33

Brenda PERKS.
Canadian age group record holder but did not make the team.
However, was chosen to be Olympic flag bearer at the opening and closing
ceremonies. That makes her more than half an Olympian !
Now swims (mostly breaststroke) with Sackville, NS.

Cliff BARRY, water polo. Coached the late Victor Davis.
Swam masters for Pte-Claire then Etobicoke. Has set several NR's  

Bruce ROBERTSON, fly silver. Had a great year in 1999 for TECH, Ont. 5 NR's

Robert STODDART, brst. Ontario.  5 NR's, some set very recently

Cathy RAFTERY, back. Now Cathy Mulligan, set several Que prov. records

Merrily STRATTEN, 200 free. Ontario. Her 1978 800 free time was a 25-29 WR

Sylvia DOCKERILL,  brst. Swam 1:18.64 in prelims at Munich. Had her first
masters met in 2003.  


1968:

Ralph HUTTON, 400 free Silver, also 7th placer at 1964 Tokyo 200 back,
known as the Iron Man of Cdn swimming back then,
swam masters in late 80's with great success

Tony JARVIS, 100 free for GB. Played major role in Cdn Masters. 8 NR's

Helle VERSVELD, 400 free Holland. Swam masters early 90's. Mother of Mark.
Seems to come out every 5 years and then break many Free records !

1964:

Vinus VAN BAALEN, 100 free, Holland. Moved to Ont, then Al.
 Swam in heat 1 of 9 in the 100 free in 56.80, did not advance to semis
 Swam 3rd leg on 4x100 free relay (55.0 split) Team was 9th with 3:43.80.

 Owns several NR's (8) 
 Added a 50 back WR in 2002 to his record collection, also a 50 y bak
 WR in Spring 2003.

Patty THOMPSON, member of 7th place 4x100 free relay. Swam several NR's
in late 80's. Still holds 2 

Dan SHERRY, 100 free, 8th placer at 200 fly, swam masters in the late 80's

Ron JACKS, BC a 3-time Olympian, 1964-68-72 ! Free, back and fly. Also
4th in 1968 4x200 free relay. Set 400 free masters record in 1982 (4:33), and added
the 50 fly later (ref Roy H. Smith)

Peter BELL, Did not compete but was assistant manager. (Had competed
at the 1958 CWG). In 2000, broke the 65-69 200 br WR with 3:05.24 

Pano CAPERONIS, for Switzerland 64 and 68.

1956:

Beth WHITTALL, 100 fly, now swimming for Georgian Bay Masters.
If one person may be credited with creating Masters in Canada, it is Beth.  
List of Masters achievements (besides records) a bit too long to detail here.

Virginia GRANT, 100 free, now Virginia Ridpath, set Cdn records at 60-64

George PARK, free. Re-appeared at the 98 Nationals in Edmonton.
In his own words: "I am 73 now (2006). I competed at the 1954 and 58
Commonwealth games, 56 Olympics and 55 Pan Am Games. Swam in the Marathon
swimming circuit for 10 years and did a little master swimming.
Ran swimming schools in Toronto, Hamilton and St Catherines.
Now teach swimming in Mexico in the winter and video swimming stroke analysis".


Erika KORBELY
I found out recently that one of our members, Erika Korbely,
swam in the Olympics for Hungary. She is currently swimming at 65
so maybe you can figure out which Olympics that would have been.

Erika has been active with Edmonton for a few years, and doing rather well.
I am guessing 1956, it could have been 1952 or 1960.


Jeno ATS

 Swam (for Hungary) 400 free in 4:47.6, 200 fly 2:31.1
 and the 800 relay (2:13.2 split for 8:57.2 overall).

 George Park (Canada) remembers having talked to Jeno (53 years ago).

 Jeno later came to Canada and coached among others Suzanne Gosselin,
 currently a Natl and Quebec record holder (55+).

Lenora FISHER now GILCHRIST
Swam 100 back at 52 and 56 OGs. From Ocean Falls.
Later swam Masters with NVM.

Nick TEMPLEMAN, 200 brst for Germany. Broke many records in the 90's (10)
Just added 2 WRs as a 70-74 in Calgary May 2001  

Carolyn LEWIS, 400 free 4th with 5:16.5. Swam as Carolyn Green, USA.
Also won two Pan-Am silvers (400 free, 1951 and 1955).
Moved to BC in the mid-80's, became the BC recorder. Also set many BC and Natl
records during that time.

Valerie GYENGE, Olympic gold medal at 400 free 5:12.1 for Hungary.
Escaped to Canada in 1956. Swam Masters in 1977 with NRs at 40-44,
32.70 and 1:13.80 SCM. Swam as Valerie Garay.
Her daughter is Judy Garay now a 40-44 brst record holder !

Bev TUCKER TYMS (deceased) was on the 1952 demonstration synchro swimming team

1948:

Mariyan STIPETIC, 1500 free finalist for Yugoslavia, now swimming 70-74
for Markham. 9 NR's 

Catherine KERR, freestyle. Qualified but declined to go. Now swimming
for WMSC 80-84 and a recent 47.05 50 free. Total of 31 NR's (!) 

Doris McEWAN. Swam for GBR. Back or brst ? Possibly as Doris Storey.
As a master, swimming for BIMS and has held WRs on 2 occasions (despite a
case of cancer in her sixties). Also 7 NRs  (ref. Pat Niblett)


1936:

Bob HAMMERTON. His 70-74 50 free record from 1983 (32.89) still stands.

Pat MILSOM. Qualified in backstroke, but could not swim due to
inflexible German bureaucracy - misspelled name.
Held many Masters back NRs. Now deceased.

Noel OXENBURY, swam backstroke. Swam at the 2004 BC provincials, in the
85-89 age group. Long time chaperone at various Olympics.

1932:

James (Hud) STEWART, track & field. Cdn Master pioneer. Went to the 1971
inaugural US championships. Now deceased. Once held the 200 back WR.

1924:

Tom WALKER, diving ? Was first Cdn master to swim over age 85. Now deceased.
Coached Beth Whittall at the 1955 Panams !
