Sleepy Hollow

06 Apr 2002

I had a friend in grade 7 who, after we read some watery verson of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", would chant, "Ichabod, Ichabod. Yeah, yeah," by sucking air in an other-worldly croaking. Even after asking him, I was never sure why he did that, other than it sounded kind of cool.

I want very much for a beautiful woman
to hand me a cold glass of beer.

Flash forward many years. I'm in a movie theatre that was built about the time I was in grade 7, and I'm sitting with a different friend, watching Tim Burton's "Sleepy Hollow." How shall I describe it? "Fine family entertainment," suggests my friend.

Sure. That's as good as anything. On that cold January night, in an almost empty theatre, after a decent meal and with a package of red Twizzlers, yes, it was fine family entertainment.

I'd be remiss in not mentioning the fabulous spread of supporting cast members: Michael Gambon ("The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover" -- favoured film of CBC Vox Magnificat Lister Sinclair), Miranda Richardson ("Damage"), and Jeffrey Jones ("Amadeus," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," and "Howard The Duck").
