CHUM Year end Facts, Figures and Feats
The 1960's

Some general notes about the countdowns in the 60's

CHUM had a year-end countdown through out the decade. It was broadcast on New Years Day begining at noon. The first year it was published on the back of the chart was 1963, and this would continue for the next two years and would then be published in differnt formats that are listed under the years below. For '63 - '65 the some of the longer song titles were edited on the list becase of lack of space -- for example a certain 1964 Gerry & the Pacemakers song that was at #47 for the year is listed as "Sun Catch You Crying" on all the lists I have printed out the entire name of the song for historical purposes.

1962-- The Facts:
The top '62 of 62 was broadcast on New Years Day 1963.The list didn't appear on the the weekly chart so I've complied a list based on chart activity.
I've also complied a page that inclued facts based on the weekly charts and you can go to it by following THIS LINK
The Figures: The 62 records are represented by 57 artists.
The top artists
1. Elvis Presley (3)
T2. Chubby Checker (2)
T2. Four Seasons (2)
T2. Dion (2)
8 of the artists are in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame
2 of the artists are Canadian
The Feats: Beginnings of the folk wave with Peter Paul & Mary Burl Ives and Gord Lightfoot. ... Something that the chart doesn't reflect is the amount of twist records that were in the charts in the first month of 1962 ....
1963-- The Facts:
The Top 63 of '63 was on the back cover of published (giveaway) chart of Jan. 13/64. It had the names of the songs but not the artists names.
The Figures: The 63 records are represented by 47 artists
The top artists
1. Four Seasons (4)
T2. Cliff Richard (3)
T2. Beach Boys (3)
T2. Bobby Vinton (3)
T2. Crystals (3)
6 of the artists are in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame
3 of the artists are Canadian
The Feats: The two Cliff Richard songs in the top ten reflects the British population in Toronto and thier influence on the charts ... Three songs from the Crystals and four more from other 'Girl Groups' mark the peak of that style of music ... The Four Seasons have the best year coming off thier '62 hit 'Sherry' ... The three Canadian acts were local Toronto acts.
1964-- The Facts:
The Top 64 of '64 was on the back cover of published (giveaway) chart of Jan. 11/65. Once again it had the names of the songs but not the artists names.
The Figures: The 64 records are represented by 43 Artists
The Top Artists
1. The Beatles (10)
T2. Dave Clark Five (5)
T2. Elvis Presley (5)
4. Gerry & The Pacemakers (3)
10 of the artists are in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame
2 of the artists are Canadian
The Feats: The Beatles dominate in a way that will never be seen again ... On the published chart the #2 song was not listed as a 2-sided hit -- I have included as such because it was during most of it's run and was the #1 song when I first started listening to CHUM... The #9 & #10 songs were the A & B sides of the same record ... British performers account for 29 of the 64 songs ... Biggest hype -- Beatles vs. Dave Clark 5... Elvis make a much stronger showing in Toronto than he does in the U.S. ... Only 5 artists have hits in both '63 & 64 year end charts
1965-- The Facts:
The Top 65 of '65 was on the back cover of published (giveaway) chart of Jan. 10/66. Once again it had the names of the songs but not the artists names.
The Figures: The 65 records are represented by 48 artists
The Top Artists
1. The Beatles (5)
2. Herman's Hermits (4)
3. Rolling Stones (3)
T4. 8 Artists tied (2)
10 of the artists are in the Hall Of Fame
3 of the artists are Canadian
The Feats: Herman Hermits rule the charts in April resulting in 3 top 15 year end songs ... Rolling Stones & folk rock begin... Lack of airplay of Motown results in only two songs in the year end (What no 'My Girl'! other Supremes songs?)
1966-- The Facts:
The Top 66 of '66 was on the inside back cover of published (giveaway) chart of Jan. 9/67. It had both the name of the songs and artists listed which would become common practice from now on. There was a tie at #25 as the same song was listed by two different artists.
The Figures: The 67 records (including the tie) are represented by 48 artists
The Top Artists
T1. The Beatles (4)
T1. Herman's Hermits (4)
2. Mamas and the Papas (3)
T3. 11 Artists tied at (2)
10 of the artists are in the Hall Of Fame
3 of the artists are Canadian
The Feats: The Beatles repeat their '64 feat by having the top 2 songs of the year... Herman's Hermits make thier first Toronto appearance on Aug. 6th which accounts for thier continuing popularity... The 'Toronto Sound' concert on Sept. 24 attracts 14 of the top groups in the Toronto area prompting CHUM to play more local talent
1967-- The Facts:
Top 100 of '67 started out as a list of 67 songs that was on inside back cover of published (giveaway) chart of Jan. 1/68, and heard on CHUM on New Years Day 1968. In December of 2000 I finally got a copy of that chart that listed the year end chart. In May 1972 during a holiday weekend "CHUM 500" countdown of the top 100's of the last five years, the top 67 became a top 100. but with one notable exception -- it had little relation to the chart performance on the weekly charts of 1967. In fact the top 20 was almost the same as the top 20 of '67 according to the "Cashbox" year end listing. That expanded 1972 list was published in a local Toronto newspaper. The fact that I took the 1972 list as the "official" one inspired me to compiled an Alternative Top 100 list based on the weekly charts. Also on that page there is a link for a page featuring the top 10 Canadian songs and a comparison of the 1972 edition chart and the Cashbox chart for 1967. Dale Patterson has written an essay and included airchecks on the CHUM DJ's in 1967.
I've also complied a page that inclued facts based on the weekly charts and you can go to it by following THIS LINK

The Feats: 1967 was Canada's 100th birthday and local artists were well represented on the weekly charts (including 2 number 1's)so why no Canadians on the year end chart??? ... More Atlantic/Motown acts on the list than ever before
1968-- The Facts:
Top 100 of '68 was available by mail by writing to CHUM, and was also featured in a local paper. In May 1972 and 1973 during the holiday weekend it was also replayed as a part of the "CHUM 500" countdown of the top 100's of the last five years, and also published in a local paper. There was however, like 1967 a number of top 5 songs on the weekly charts that did not make the year end Top 100. I have compliled an alternative Top 100 for 1968.

First #1 is 'Sunshine of your Love'... 'Bubblegum' music has it's best year.
