Japanese Experience in your Library

The Association for Japanese Culture (A.J.C.) offers a special visiting program for public libraries. This is a one-hour demonstration and participation program that can be fun for any age group.

1) Story Telling KAMISHIBAI (paper drama) is a form of storytelling accompanied by a sequence of pictures. This gives a more dramatic effect than telling stories with an ordinary book. An old Japanese fable is told in this method.

2) Origami A sheet of origami paper is a perfect square, coloured only on one side for contrast. The creativity in transforming a sheet of paper into three-demensional shapes is infinite. It is said that the creation of one thousand folded cranes tied on strings will make your wish come true. (Participation)- Everybody gets a chance to try making a puffy balloon, tricky boat, fancy box or warrior's helmet.

3) Kimono This traditional Japanese costume is now worn only for special occasions such as weddings, the tea ceremony, formal parties, and festivals. The KIMONO is worn with OBI (sash), TABI (socks) and ZORI (footwear) or GETA (clogs). (Participation) - Volunteers are chosen to model some of the many different types of KIMONO.
