  Cut Shots

In this section, you will learn how to determine your angled shots to pocket your ball. In fact, you will find out where the point of impact is located on object ball.

  ... with far ball

The cutting angle is determined at the collision point between the two balls. You must remember that :

Angled shot = Angle at the point of impact

When a ball gets a direct hit from the white ball, the angle is known as 0° (see animation). If your impact point is to the right, then your angle is to the left. In practice, the cutting angle is 0° to 90° right and 0° to 90° left.

If you are a beginner, I suggest you do the following :

• The ball you wish to pocket should in direct line between you and the pocket.
• Lean over the table to see the ball in front of the pocket.
• Take your position and point your cue to the center of your ball - also known as
   the impact point.
• Now check the collision impact point on your white ball.
• Stroke the white ball so that it hit directly your ball's impact point.

  ... with near ball

A near ball is when the distance between the white ball and your ball is shorter than one foot. That is the distance you should use to mesure your impact point on your white ball.

The closer the balls are to one another, the more internal the impact if on the white ball. You will also see that the closer the balls are to one another, the larger the angle is. We have the illusion that we must aim towards another direction (see amination).

• First, determine where the impact point is on the ball you wish to pocket.
• Second, do the cutting angle and visualize where the impact point is located on the white ball.
• Then modify the angle considering the width between the balls.

Know that when using angles, the impact point of your ball is not centered.

You should practice this at your local billiard club or go on to the next section : Advanced principles.
