Refinishing the topsides and bottom

We decided to paint the hull and deck. The hull was in good shape but the deck was obviously showing it's age. We decided to use Awlgrip. My boat builder friend said that there was only one choice. He did not tell us till later that he had never used it. He had employees that did. You must remove all paints. mould releases, waxes etc.. De Naming.jpg (42735 bytes)
The preparation is long and tedious. The Vega has lots of inside corners that were particularly hard to fair out. We filled all the errant holes, nicks and scratches.   Close & Personal.jpg (30343 bytes)
The first coat of primer. This spot is the most difficult to paint. The cove beside the genoa track has to painted with an artists brush to avoid puddles in the bottom.  Primer.jpg (30192 bytes)
The first coat of Awlgrip. Look at the glow! First Coat.jpg (21417 bytes)
The second coat. You can see my reflection. The hull takes less than an hour to paint. The deck takes four hours to paint. It is hard to keep a wet edge.  Second coat.jpg (31808 bytes)
