Welcome to Galleryjnet.com, hosting Art by Teacher-Artist, Jeannette Kogeler. The art in this site was created outdoors, in the fresh air, or "En Plein Air". It is the play of light in Nature that inspires me to create. A great delight to the senses, Nature challenges my imagination and intellect to capture its many hues and moving colorations as light shifts and changes in front of me. Painting common day objects, such as a pair of shoes on a rocky shoreline, in Natural light satisfies as well as stimulates my curiosity about color and art. When I observe Nature in all its complexity and beauty it renders awe in my heart, mind and soul. My goal in making art is to communicate this experience of the beauty, color and light in Nature.
Most of the Paintings were done "on location" in the Plein Air fashion commonly used by artists to study the colors of nature and light in a subject of their choice. A few of these were finished in the Studio, from memory, imagination, or feeling, and occasionally with the use of a photograph taken from the location. Plein air works are small in size so that they can easily and quickly be carried on and off the field, about 4"x6" to 12" x 16". Artists try to capture the essence of a scene or subject within 2 hours of light. Painting beyond 2 hours changes the light source dramatically so that shadows and quality of light would require a new canvas to paint.
The main objective for my plein air work is intended to be a finished work of art - on site - but often ends up with unexpected results: [ to create a finished work of art ' on site' ], to prepare for a larger canvas, to study color, to create a great composition and to just be with other plein air artists and learn more about the craft. Part of the reason is preparedness: one does not always know ahead of time the compositions, weather conditions and terrain the location offers. It's always a bit of a gamble. But that too is what I love about Plein Air painting.
