Octahedral
domes
Octahedral domes are the forgotten geodesic species. The only one I ever
saw is a house near Montréal. I also saw photograph of big industrial
octa-domes somewhere in the USA. This dome shape offer the ability to match a
sphere to cubical shapes encountered in standard building practice.
Here are some good reasons to use this shape: Most of the time, square
foundations are less expensive than other shapes requiring angles other than 90
degrees. Your house may have to comply to a more customary look because of
zoning regulation in your area or you may want to use standard doors and windows
more easily. On the other hand, octa-domes have more different components than
icosahedron-based (ordinary) domes. Indeed, you have to go to a 6 frequency
subdivision of the octahedron to achieve the smoothness a 3 frequency icosa-dome
will give.
