Company Background

Gilles Garon Consultants Limited was formed in August 1994. The company offers consulting services in smart cards, information security, and electronic commerce.

Prior to forming Gilles Garon Consultants, from 1985 to July 1994, Gilles Garon was Senior Manager of Information Security and Control at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. His responsibilities included research, development, and implementation of security on all bank systems. Mr. Garon represented CIBC on several banking committees. He formed the Canadian Smart Card Standards Steering Committee of the Canadian Payments Association in 1991, and chaired it until July 1994. He was a member of the Interac Association Security Committee since its formation in 1986 to July 1994, and a past chair.

Mr. Garon served as Canadian delegate on ISO/TC68/WG7 from February 1991 to July 1994. WG7 developed integrated circuit card security standards for financial transaction systems. Mr. Garon was the project editor for ISO 10202-7 and ISO 10202-8 standards. Mr. Garon also participated on the Canadian Advisory Committee on ISO TC68 standards, and the Canadian Advisory Committee on ISO SC17 standards. He also chaired the Canadian Support Group on Integrated Circuit Cards, a group that provided Canadian input to the development of ISO standards

Over the past twenty years Mr. Garon made many presentations on information security and smart card technology at conferences in Canada and the United States. He has published several papers on cryptography and smart cards. Mr. Garon has a B.A.Sc. and M.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Ottawa.
