TO THE DESCENDANTS OF ANDREW HAMILTON AND LILLIAN DAY GENERAL:
Roy has found the following family in the "Extracts of the Scottish Church Records":
John STEWART and (Elizabeth) Elisabeth DeWAR married 9 December 1823, Comrie, Perth,
Scotland
Children:
1. Mary born November 14, 1824, Kincardine, by Doune, Perth, Scotland
2. Alexander born 26 October 1828, Kincardine, by Doune, Perth, Scotland
3. Janet born 24 October 1830, Kincardine, by Doune, Perth, Scotland
This family may be connected to our Family Tree in some way. One such connection may be via James HAMILTON (Andrew T, Andrew, John, Robert) whose second wife was Janet Stewart. According to the book "Reflections of Restoule" Janet was born in 1830 which coincides with the above. Whether there is any connection to John FORREST/Mary STEWART (and hence my HAMILTON line) is not yet known.
I wrote to Joseph Hamilton in Kingston about the "Hamilton Families International" (see last Newsletter) but have not received a reply. I'm hoping for some information I can include in a future Newsletter.
RELATIONSHIPS:
I have always had trouble with relationships, especially "removed cousins". This may help to clear this up or it may confuse you further.
1. Start with the cousin at the highest generation level and count how many
generations you must go up to find the brothers or sisters that are the
common ancestors of these cousins. This is the "FIRST", "SECOND" or
"THIRD" part of the cousin relationship.
Your first cousin is the child of your aunt or uncle.
Your second cousin is the grandchild of your great aunt or great uncle.
(If two people are first cousins, the children of each will be second cousins)
Your third cousin is the great-grandchild of your great-great aunt or uncle.
(Children of two second cousins, will be third cousins) and so on;
Now for the "removed" cousins!
2. Count how many generation levels the cousins are apart. This is the number
they are removed.
"Removed" means one cousin is at a different generation level than the other.
If two people are some type of cousins, but they are at different generation
levels, then they are "removed" cousins and are removed by the number of
generations they are apart. If someone is your first cousin, then his or her
child is your first cousin once removed and you are HIS or HER first cousin
once removed also. So:
Your first cousin once removed is the child of your first cousin, or,
is the child of your great aunt or great uncle.
Your second cousin once removed is the child of your second cousin.
Your first cousin twice removed is the child of your first cousin, once removed.
Your second cousin twice removed is the child of your second cousin once removed.
and so on; An example is given below:
GREAT-GREAT-GRANDFATHER
/ \
GREAT-GRANDFATHER GREAT-GREAT-UNCLE
/ \ \
GRANDFATHER GREAT-UNCLE 1ST COUSIN TWICE REMOVED
/ \ \ \
FATHER UNCLE 1ST COUSIN ONCE REM'D 2ND COUSIN ONCE REM'D

A HISTORY OF THE CLAN HAMILTON
There have been many histories written for the Scottish clan of HAMILTON. The Historians generally agree that the early origins were in Normandy and we came via England (1066) to Scotland about 1300 (although one records that there was an earlier Viking origin, either landing in northern Scotland about 870 AD or via Normandy (940 AD) and England as stated above).
The ancient name of the clan was CADZOW (pronounced cadyow) and varoius spellings of the surname have included HAMELTON, HAMELDON, HAMILDON, HAMYLTON, HAMBLETON and HAMILTON. Scribes recorded names as they sounded and it was not unlikely that a person would be born with one spelling, married with another, and buried with another.
Following is a descendant chart for the early Hamiltons in Scotland. There are significant differences in the histories so this account is just one possibility. Interestingly, our roots have been traced (Robert HAMILTON b: c1712) to the same year as the 4th Duke of Hamilton's death. Almost certainly we are descended from one of these branches ...... but which one?
