Jenny Poole-Simpson was my Grandmother. She passed away a number of years ago, but my memories of her are still strong, made even stronger by a simple little gift which was given to me by my family.
It is a simple little calendar 14 cm (5 1/2 in) wide, 22 cm (9 in) tall, bound at the top by a thin cord. Reddish-brown in colour, it is intricately embossed with a gold 'pillar and scroll' design and beautifully designed fruits and leaves, though much of the gold has been worn away and the cover is becoming a little ragged.

Inside are 55 pages, including title and end pages. Each calendar page constitutes one week, with the month and year printed at the top. Down the left side are the days listed Sunday to Saturday. The right side of each page is occupied by a 'Golden Thought' by a number of people: from Dickens and Wordsworth to Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt.
The first page, January 1915, also contains the hand-written inscription: 'Merry Christmas from Aunt Matti'.
The diary is written on the back of each page.
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
