Nadine Lake Trip Report

Day 1-May 7, 2006

After a 5 AM departure from Orleans and our traditional big breakfast at Irving’s in Pembroke, our group of 4 arrived at Brent at about 10 AM on Sunday, May 7th. After unloading our gear and loading up the canoes, we hit the water at about 10:30. It always seems that anytime one has to cross a big lake, the wind is in your face. This occasion was no exception, and after figuring out where the mouth of the Nipissing actually was, we crossed the lake against a 6” chop and made our way into the delta. The first portage of any trip is tough, but especially the first trip of the year. We were ridiculously heavily burdened with a lot of weight from our food, packs and the water jug that I brought along for our first night’s use. If we ever do this trip again, some items will certainly remain at home. We met several canoeists along the way, all returning to Brent. Most had come through the portage from Luckless Lake, but we did meet a couple from North Bay that was returning from Nadine. They told us that the weather the day before was cold….snow and sleet, and that the fishing had been “average”. They also told us they had no dry matches or lighter to make a fire while they were there. They also commented on how much gear we had, and about the long steep portage we had to conquer before arriving at Nadine Lake. Their final advice to us was to get as far downriver today, so as to leave enough time the next day to indeed reach Nadine Lake. We continued upriver and arrived at the portage to Luckless at about 3 PM. We decided to push on and arrived at the 180m portage about 20 minutes later. At the portage was a gentleman named Frank, and another gentleman whom were camped at the first site. We asked if the other site was available, and made camp there. Frank’s traveling partner told us about their upcoming long portage to Luckless the next day….we all thought it would be a very long day for them, but as it turned out, I think our next day would prove to be much longer indeed. BTW Frank, thanks again for the delicious Outback Oven Brownies! After a great steak and baked potato supper, we were in our tents quite early that night
