Frank W Gundaker's version of the O-SS
A while back I learned that Frank was building a One-Sheet skiff when he posted a note about his project on the BolgerList. I contacted Frank and asked for a photo and received these great scans. In Frank's version he built a taped chine rather than the outside chine log. This makes the construction somewhat more difficult but it does increase the displacement slightly. Most of the O-SS's that I have heard about thus far have been build for "large kids" and have been used for such diverse outside activities as luggable boat tenders, recreational boats, duck hunting platforms and as in John Booley's case for frog hunting.

Before the paint went on Frank and his daughter Rachel tried out her boat. The water is was about knee/mid thigh deep. It is a concrete lined pond with fountain across street from Rachel 's grandma; this explains the lack of life jackets. Frank claims that a half dozen people had gathered to for the launching and to see if it swamped with Frank's weight. Apparently it did not.

I like this photo because it demonstrates one feature of the One-Sheet Skiff. At 30 pounds it is light and can be handled by smaller children. My memories, as a child, is of rowboats with heavy oars and impossibly heavy hulls.

Franks Daughter Rachel picked the colour and plans to apply some spice girl pictures to personalize her boat. I like your colour choice Rachel.
A picture of the boat was displayed at the Atlanta Boat Show in Jan '99. The boat will be on display at the Atlanta Dogwood Festival Apr. 9,10, &11, '99.
