Follow where the path may lead Albert and I are recently retired from the life of farming; we live in the country and have continued with our breeding establishment of Australian Shepherd dogs. We pride ourselves in being breeder, owner handlers. Albert is third generation Clydesdale enthusiast and attributes his success to his best and toughest mentor....his father, Wreford Hewson. Compliments were not scarce, they were non-existent. No criticism was the biggest form of praise that was metered out. All the farm work was done with horses, no tractor on their farm. So, he was driving teams at six years of age; three abreast and four tandem on the hay loader at nine; and showed the 5th prize brood mare at the 1946 Royal before he was twelve. That was the first Royal after WWII and was at every Royal thereafter -- between showing on line, driving hitches and judging it in 1999. Until 2005, there had been a Hewson owned horse exhibited at every Royal. We had a select herd of approximately 30 horses -- all of which were homegrown. The majority were brood mares that produced 6 to 10 exciting youngsters each year; some of which we would exhibit in the ring. No matter how nice all your animals are, you can only show so many! Striving for quality our stock carried the bloodlines of world renowned animals. Our goal was to produce an animal who was competitive in the conformation ring and could successfully do what it was bred for. We had stopped hitching but continued to strive for the same heads up, free moving ability in our foals. Having been interested and involved in dogs as long as I can remember, our family fell in love with a Siberian Husky we fostered for Canine Vision Canada. My involvement evolved into exhibiting Siberian Huskies in 1985 and establishing "ThundeRun" prefix in 1988. My first litter, a Siberian litter, arrived in July 1990, which resulted in 2, owner handled Champions. Australian Shepherds have been my breed since 1996. A wonderful friend and mentor, Georjean Hertzwig of Gefion Hall, New York, has helped me get started in the breed with her expertise, not to mention sending some very nice dogs from her kennel to mine. We enjoy a loosely based partnership sharing pedigrees and titles in both Canada and the United States. We pride ourselves in being breeder, owner, handlers. There have been some slow times along the way what with raising a family, work etc. While we enjoy creating lovely Aussies and showing in the conformation ring, we strive to create an Aussie that can do it all. I dabble in a number of other other disciplines to help round out my dogs minds......agility, disc, dock dogs. This breed can do it all if you are willing to spend the time to educate them in various areas. I use clicker training methods starting with litters at 5 weeks. I have served in elected and volunteer positions in both breeds of the dogs and am a 20 year member of Canadian Kennel Club. Both Albert and I have served in elected positions for the Clydesdale Horse Association. We are now members of Barrie Kennel and Obedience Club, and the Australian Shepherd Club of Ontario We are proud of our accomplishments in the ring with both horses and dogs. We are also proud that we have produced the kind of dogs that have made others fall in love with the breed too. We are active and working hard in many aspects of the sport, club work, breeding, ring stewarding, showing and I am working on my first permit judge for the bottom half of Group 3. Please enjoy a 'tour' of our home on the web. Below are some happenings during 2006. |
