Notes on the Bibliography

This bibliography strives to be the most complete bilingual bibliography of African theological writers produced up to the time of this writing, including a large sampling of works in both French and English, the two most commonly used languages for theological work in Africa today. Some works in German, Swahili, and Hausa are included, though we do not consider our work to be in any sense complete for those languages.

Of the authors listed here, 200+ are African, of which approximately 15 are African scholars in disciplines other than theology or Religious Studies. For the leading African theologians, such as John Mbiti, John Pobee, Kwesi Dickson, Bolaji Idowu, Lamin Sanneh, Mercy and Modupe Oduyoye, Edward Fasholé-Luke, Osadolor Imasogie, Jesse Mugambi, Masamba ma Mpolo, Jean-Marc Éla, Fabien Eboussi-Boulaga, O. Bimwenyi-Kweshi, Anselme Titianma Sanon, Tshibangu, Tshiamalenga, Meinrad Hebga, and E. Mveng, I have tried to provide as complete a list as possible of their works, though some works published in Africa are not easily available to us, thus unavoidably leading to omissions.

Non-Africans, such as Aylward Shorter and Adrian Hastings who have lived and worked for a long time in Africa and identify with Africans are, for our purposes, termed "Africanists". They have written much, but because my work is primarily devoted to African theologians, in this bibliography Africanists are listed only where a specific work is frequently cited by African theologians, or has made a particularly important contribution to the discussions.

Bibliographic resources used in the search include journals such as the Africa Theological Journal, Bulletin de Théologie Africaine/ Bulletin of African Theology, Journal of Religion in Africa, Revue du Clergé Africain, African Ecclesial Review, Cahiers des Religions Africaines, and Telema. Index publications, primarily Religion Index One and Theology in Context (published by the Institute of Missiology Missio in Aachen, Germany) were valuable research tools, as well as the online catalogues of Harvard University, and of Emory University, Atlanta, both accessed via modem connection.

Other sources include Raymond Facélina and Damien Rwegera. 1977. African Theology/ Théologie Africaine: International Bibliography 1968-1977 indexed by computer. RIC Supplement 30. Strasbourg: CERDIC Publications, and also the work of Joseph J. Lauer, Gregory Larkin and Alfred Kagan. comps. 1988. American and Canadian Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses on Africa, 1974-1987. Atlanta, Ga.: Crossroads Press, Emory University, which continues American & Canadian Doctoral Dissertations & Master's Theses on Africa, 1886-1974, compiled by Michael Sims and Alfred Kagan. Unpublished dissertations done in Europe are listed only where they have been cited in other works listed in the bibliography. Some of the dissertations listed as "unpublished" may in fact have been published since the preparation of this bibliography.

A majority of the books listed are published on presses with wide distribution networks worldwide, making them relatively easily available to students anywhere. A smaller number were purchased by the author in Nigeria from 1980-85 and in Kenya in 1992 and 1996. Some of these latter works, particularly when published by local presses without international distribution networks may be difficult to obtain outside of those two countries.
