Maple Downs

Other Projects

I just walked the course. It is a wonderful renovation. I really like the way your re-shaped the greens to give the player a lot more shot value. The bunkers are discrete, yet very well positioned to capture an errant shot. I was particularly excited to see how you built the Biarritz-type green on 13th and the modified Redan green on the 8th. You seem to have some fun with the 16th green and that will add a lot to the hole.  I see that the 18th will play well as a finishing hole. The 4th hole is now really dramatic and again the shot values are strong.

Overall, a great job.

Green Committee

Maple Downs Golf & Country Club

In 2014 Maple Downs was rebuilt to address agronomic issues, maintenance costs and weak architecture. This has opened up an opportunity to explore some alternative ideas. Not only did the committee explore the opportunity to move a few green sites to improve holes, but this allowed a holistic look at how the course plays.

The course will undergo a tree removal program designed to improve the health of the turfgrass, particularly around the greens. Further trees will be removed for playability, the health of the best trees and to open up some of the views around the property.

The biggest change will be the removal of nearly half the bunkers. This will be done in combination with a fairway recapturing program designed to put more of the undulation back in play. The biggest improvement will be the introduction of extensive short grass around the greens. This will increase the options players have for recovery shots and add a lot more decision making to the round. The goal with Maple Downs is to make the course a lot more interesting and fun to play.
