25th Annual Newmarket Voice Festival Syllabus


Vocal Solo with Obbligato Instrument
Entry Fee $30
This class encourages singers to collaborate with instrumentalists and to learn repertoire that is written for solo voice, piano and ONE solo instrument, such as oboe, flute, clarinet, trumpet, etc. Choice of piece is not to exceed four minutes.

Vocal Duet with Obbligato Instrument
Entry Fee $30
This class encourages singers to collaborate with another singer and an instrumentalist (see notes above). Choice of piece is not to exceed four minutes.

Masterclasses - Classical Solo - Jennie Such
Entry Fee Junior: $30; Senior: $35
Limited to ten singers so register early!
Choose one piece not performed by the participant in any other class during the festival. A time limit of three minutes is strongly recommended. This is a non-competitive class and open to the public. The adjudicator will work with each singer individually.
Class Description
MC01 Junior - Ages 12 - 15
MC02 Senior - Ages 16 - Adult

Senior Vocal Scholarship
Entry Fee $60
A $1000 scholarship is available to a worthy candidate who meets all the requirements and attains a minimum mark of 85 on overall adjudication. Candidates must be 18 years or older.
NOTE To be eligible for any other scholarships in this festival, participants must enter a minimum of TWO other solo categories in the festival.
Please note that previous winners of this scholarship may not enter again.
Requirements:
Candidates must perform FIVE pieces from memory at a minimum Grade Ten Conservatory level.
  • Pieces chosen must be on a current conservatory list.
    Please list grade and syllabus source beside each title and composer on the back of the entry form.
  • Program length is not to exceed twenty minutes.
  • Balance of program will be considered and must include:
    - Three different foreign languages
    - An aria from opera or oratorio (original language and key – with recitative if applicable)
    - A contemporary published original work by a Canadian composer
  • Original scores must be provided for the adjudicator.
  • * Candidates must also do a sight-singing piece provided by the adjudicator and must also answer a Viva Voce question from the adjudicator.

    SCHOL 18 or older

    Vocal Solo Novice Classes
    Entry Fee $30
    Open to singers who have never previously entered a music festival. Own choice of piece and style. Must supply original sheet music for the adjudicator.
    NEW: Singers may enter this category multiple times with repertoire that has not been previously performed at the festival, but a separate entry and fee is required for each song.

    Vocal Solo - Mature Singer
    Entry Fee $30
    Open to adult singers from the community who are not currently enrolled in a university music program or pursuing a degree in music. Own choice of piece and style.
    NEW: Singers may enter this category multiple times with repertoire that has not previously been performed at the Festival, but a separate entry and fee is required for each song.
