Although The Advocate tells us that John Kelly was from Ireland's Eye, NL, it is only partly correct. John was the eldest son of John (1875 - ) and Elizabeth (1876 - ) Kelly (nee Bugden) of Black Duck Cove, a small community on the island of Ireland's Eye, Trinity Bay, NL. At the time of the 1921 census, John was in residence with his parents and five brothers and sisters. He is recorded as being born in St. John's.
Eugene Toope, in his book Eye Your Roots (and more), a chronicle of Ireland's Eye and Rise's Harbour, published in 1997, states that John had joined the Forestry Corps in 1915 and was discharged early in 1919. His registration number was 82509. After World War I he joined the crew of the President Coaker.
The Advocate records that John had been associated with two previous shipwrecks. Work is progressing on learning more about these events.
