General information

Our association was incorporated on August 24th, 1966, has almost five hundred members and its aspirations are to:
·    Regroup and unite the greatest number of descendants, direct or by alliance, of our common ancestor, René Hoûallet (Ouellet-te), into a permanent association.
·    Promote family demonstrations or others in honour of the common ancestor for one or many of his deserving descendants (centenaries, tercentenaries, of parishes, of groups, golden anniversary, etc…)
·    Maintain the commemorative monument, erected by means of subscriptions at the rural Sanctuary of Notre-Dame-de-Fatima, at La Pocatière, as well as the adjacent lot.
·    Publish a periodical magazine for our Association bearing the name “LE HOUALLET” that will be sent free to all members who have maintained their membership in order. This magazine will publish genealogical, historic and patriotic questions susceptible of interesting the members, the students and the general public and to promote the cultural life in our midst.
·    Organize the celebration of a mass, each year, at the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame-de-Fatima or elsewhere, for the deceased members.
·    Promote cultural exchanges of information and documentation with similar associations or analogous societies.
·    Develop mutual assistance among members and, when possible, to come to the aid of certain charitable organizations.

Message from the President

Dear cousins Ouellet and Ouellette,
What an intense joy I felt following the magnificent feast that grouped, on September 5th, 1999 at Kamouraska, more than one hundred and thirty Ouellet-te from heart or blood!
What happiness it was to see the old members and what a pleasure it was to discover new faces! That day of gathering was, as I had wished, a magical moment full of human contact and recognition towards our predecessors who proudly transmitted us their name!
Let’s take advantage of the cold days of fall and winter and of the wonderful time of the Holidays to rejoin ours, young and old, in order to warm our hearts with their exciting stories! In discovering the dreams of some and the souvenirs of others we learn to love them. Our ancestors also had their dreams and souvenirs. All their lives, they applied themselves to expand our country more each day, by giving a little of their own life to each child and by working the soil to feed them. In order to give History its full flavor, lets resuscitate the characters and lets recreate the atmosphere of the time, lets make them live their dramas and joys under our eye. By listening to and contemplating them in their familiar surroundings, we discover their sentiments and emotions, we enter into the secret of the beginnings of a country in progress.
The consoling sheaf of doings and actions of our ancestors teach us that our origins are worthy of all our admiration. “It is a duty to know the history of our country”. We must render this just homage to our ancestors who sprayed it with their perspiration and blood; it is important to take possession of their ancient glory, common heritage of the rich and poor; we must finally instruct ourselves for the future, and learn by which virtues a nation subsists and grows. Let the indifferent walk on the grave of a man, on the threshold of a cathedral, and let him go, without regret, to search far, from his native country, an easier life. A man with heart knows that the fruit of work and of courage is around him. His life is laborious; but much harder was the life of his ancestors. Humble worker, he brings his valour to their age-old works, and during his leisure activities, it is with the stories of the past that he quenches his virtue. The house of his fathers, his church, his village, the homeland everything brightens up of souvenirs, of noble thoughts, like a soul that speaks to his.”
Lets try to wake up the history of the country and of its personages who built it little by little along the years. A strong life animates and unifies these pages of the past. It is the life in former times, one of the good old times in this country.
Merry Christmas! Happy new year and the paradise at the end of your days!

Report of the president

Report of  the1997 gathering
The assembly took place in Trois-Pistoles on August 31st at L’Arc-en-Ciel School under the honorary presidency of Mr. Richard Ouellet, mayor of Saint-Simon.
The 31st gathering in Trois-Pistoles, a grand success!
Following the magnificent feast that took place on September 1st at Trois-Pistoles, the members of the Board of Directors of the Association des Ouellet-te d’Amérique, wish to thank the population of Trois-Pistole for their support, collaboration and their participation in the activities.
More than 200 participants from Québec, New-Brunswick, Ontario, Maine and Massachusetts attended the 31st gathering of the association among them Jérémy, 2 years old, and Adélaide 89 years old. Also a number of them of which Mgr Gilles Ouellet, retired in Trois-Pistole and Mr. Gilles Ouellet from Rimouski, who were at their first gathering 13 years ago, at the Oratory St Joseph in Montréal.
Throughout the years except at the end of the years 1970, the sun inevitably, was there. The day went very well under the honorary president Mr. Richard Ouellet, mayor of Saint-Siméon. Mr. Francis Ouellet, owner of the restaurant Le Gondolier and his personnel, served an excellent meal. Jeannine, the association president, narrated the presence of the Ouellet at Trois-Pistole. In 1804, François Ouellet and Françoise D'Amours, in 1822, Céleste Ouellet and François Saucier and in 1823 Victoire Ouellet and Henri Saint-Pierre. A great-great-great grandchild of the ancestor René Hoûallet, notary Jos Ouellet was the first notary of Trois-Pistole in 1816 and he practiced his profession until 1865, a total of 49 years. His great-great grandchild Madeleine married Thomas Ouellet in 1966 at Saint-Guy of Rimouski. In commemoration of this gathering, the Association Ouellet-te of America, placed a plaque at the Notary's house, erected in 1842 and that has become a centre of art and craft. Notary Hervé Rousseau lived in the house until 1964. The centre is opened every day from June to October and the entrance is free.
Twenty lucky participants were able to go home with various prizes drawn after the meal. About forty participants boarded a bus to visit the tourist attractions of Trois?Pistole including the area used for the filming of the popular serial Bouscotte, on Radio Canada.
During the annual general assembly the following members were re-elected or elected, they were: President Jeannine Ouellet from Rivière-du-Loup, Vice-president Pauline Huot-Ouellet from Saint-Pacôme, Director General Alphonse Ouellet from Lévis, administratrice Victoire Ouellet-Fortier from Saint-Romain, administrator Lionel Ouellet from Paint-Pascal, administrator Richard Ouellette from Sherbrooke, administrator Florent Ouellet from Lévis.
The members of the Club des 100 attended a meeting with Jeannine the president and Réjean Ouellette responsible for the Club, to discuss, promote and develop means of attracting 100 members to subscribe $100.00 each. These funds would be used solely to create a reserve for the development of special projects:
·    to continue to develop the site Internet
·    write the history of the Ouellet-te
·    publish a family dictionary
·    computerize the secretariat, the bulletin and the accounting.
The day finished at the fifth historic church of Notre-Dame-des-Neiges of Trois?Pistole inaugurated in 1888 and erected in accordance with the exterior plans of architect David Ouellet and the interior plans of architect Joseph-Pierre Ouellet. Monsignor Gilles Ouellet, cardinal of Rimouski, and father Gérald Ouellette, curate of Granby and moral counsellor of the Association, celebrated the mass. The music and melodious hymns aroused strong emotions that accompanied this moment of homage to the ancestors. Monsignor Ouellet said that he was agreeably surprised by so much meditation at the end of that marvellous day.
There is no doubt that the souvenir of this gathering will remain engraved in the memory of the participants.

The ancestor René Hoûallet

René Hoûallet was born in Paris, Île-de-France, after June 1st, 1639. He was baptized in Saint Jacques du Haut-Pas church, next to the Jardins de Luxembourg that Joe Dassin sang so well. On June 1st, 1639, his parents, François Hoûallet et Élisabeth (Isabelle) Barré (who was born in the bourg (village) de Beaupere, Diocese of Luçon) lived on rue des Ursins in the parish of Saint Landry, Paris. François is then assistant to the five large farms of France, meaning General Controller of the finances of the kingdom of France. The five big farms were the territories of the financial provincial administrative divisions: Bourgogne to Dijon, Provence to Aix, Aquitaine to Bordeaux or Casgogne to Toulouse and Isle-de-France, farm Versailles, to Paris. Later he became Receiver General of the province of Poitou.

René arrived in Nouvelle-France around 1663 and he married, in Notre Dame de Québec church March 8th, 1666, Anne Rivet, de Saint-Gervais de Séez, Basse Normandie. She was the widow of Grégoire Hisse, Receiver General of the eighth of Bretagne, she had arrived in the country in 1665 as a “Fille du roi”. Three sons were born and baptized in Sainte-Famille, Ile d’Orléans, Abraham-Joseph, in 1667, Mathurin-René, in 1669 and Grégoire, in 1672.

On the February 6th, 1673, René Hoûallet obtained the concession of the second land east of the parish of Sainte-Famille, a land that he had cultivated for a long time and that he sold sixteen days later to René Couttard. He then rented, the land of Thimothée Roussel and Pierre Soumande, on the Côte de Beaupré. In 1989, a large engraved stone, with an inscription in memory of René Hoûallet, was placed on the land that René Hoûallet cultivated at Sainte-Famille.

Three years after the death of Anne Rivest, in 1678, he leaves his sons with families of friends and goes to cultivate a land of approximately one (1) acre in width and thirty five (35) acres in length, that was granted to him by the Lord of Rivière-Ouelle.

In 1679, he married the widow of Nicholas Lebel, farmer. Thérèse Mignot is the daughter of Jean Mignaux dit Châtillon and of Louise Cloutier. Jean Mignaux was born at Châtillon-les-Bagneux, near Paris; he arrived in Nouvelle-France in1643. He exercised the occupations of soldier, farmer and tailor. Louise Cloutier was born in Saint-Jean de Mortagne, au Perche. She was approximately four years old when she arrived in Nouvelle France in 1634 with her parents, Zacharie Cloutier and Xaintes Dupont, and her brothers and sisters.

Thérèse Mignot was the mother of four children, Jean, Nicolas, Angélique et Joseph Lebel and heiress of a land of approximately half an acre in width in Sainte-Anne of the Grande-Anse (La Pocatière). Eight children were born from this marriage: Marie-Thérèse in 1679, Joseph in 1680, Marie-Françoise in 1682, Sébastien in 1685, Marie-Anne in 1687, Angélique- Marguerite in 1690, François in 1693, et Marie in 1696.

In 1690, René and his four sons joined with the local inhabitants to prevent Phipps and his Bostonnians from landing in Rivière-Ouelle. This historical event elevated them to the status of heroes with thirty-four other inhabitants of the area. On August 10th, 1997 a commemorative plaque was placed on a stone near the entrance of the Rivière-Ouellet cemetery, on the occasion of the festivities for the 325th anniversary.

Riddled with debts, our ancestor Hoûallet had to sell part of his land in Rivière-Ouelle. In 1721, while living at Saint-Rock des Aulnaies with his son Abraham-Joseph, he prepared his testament, leaguing, to the parish of Sainte-Anne, a piece of land where the future church could be erected. In 1966, on that piece of land, his descendants Ouellet-te erected a monument in his memory and that of his spouses and children.

A mass in the Basilica, a photo of the participants, a sight-seeing visit, an excellent meal served the Maison de la Madone, and the annual general assembly were all moments of great joy. A draw of door prices (money, a magnificent tablecloth waved by Victoire and a book written by Jeannine, etc.) also caused very emotional moments. We were also able to admire the icons made by Lise Ouellet. Another Ouellet, Thérèse Ouellet, wife of Ernest member of the Advisory Committee, published a poetry book entitled “Rêve du soir”. On page 89, the poem entitled “Sol ancestral” was inspired by the Ouellet family.
The president remembered the presence of the first Ouellet to come to the region, west of Trois-Rivières at Yamachiche in 1803, in Maskinongé in 1753, at l’Assomption in 1756 and more to the east, at Deschambault in 1790. The Notre-Dame-du-Cap basilica was the work of art of André Ouellet, architect and also coordinator from Beauport, cousin of my mother, architect and engineer also from Beauport. The stoups were done by Rejoin Ouellette of Saint-Marc-des-Carrières, member of the Advisory Committee.
Since its foundation, the following are already members of the Club des 100: Monique (2491), Rose-de-Lima (1301), Thérèse (898), Gérald (2432), Réjean (1870), Rosaire (1315), Roger(999), Ernest (819), Raoul (159) and myself, eannine (2168), Alphonse (1652), Richard (2567), Roger ( 2577), Yvon (2610), Ferdinand (1881) Three new members were welcomed into the club: Roger(2637) de Saint-Raymond, Guy (2507) de Grand Saconnex, Suisse et Julien, d’Amqui. Report of the 1998 gathering
The assembly took place in Granby on September 6th under the honorary presidency of Gérald Ouellette, parish priest of Saint-Joseph of Granby and moral counsellor of the Association.

32ND GATHERING OF THE OUELLET-TE, A HAPPY ENCOUNTER by Jeannine Ouellet (2168), president
Following the magnificent feast that took place at Granby on September 6th, 1998, the members of the Board of Directors want to sincerely thank the population of Granby for their support, their efficient collaboration and their participation in the festivities. We counted around 130 attendants from many regions of Québec, New Brunswick and Maine at the gathering, among them the youngest members David 12 years old and Pascal 15 years old, both nephew and godchild of the President. The oldest attendant was Marie Suchet, 95 years of age, from Montreal, a radiant and admirable woman. This year again, the sun was shining down on us.
The day unwound under the honorary  president father Gérald Ouellette, parish priest of Saint Joseph, in Granby and also moral counsellor of the Association. A succulent meal was served with professionalism by J. D. Inc. a caterer from Granby. Father Gérald spoke of his researches relating to our ancestor René Hoûallet and of the Hoûallet living in France, during his stays there.
The president Jeannine narrated the presence of the Ouellet in Granby which means “large village” or “large town”, which was founded in 1859. It is the 4th most important city of the “Montéregie”. The first inhabitants, three brothers from New Hampshire arrived in early 1800. The village was baptized Frost Village in their honour. In 1863, of the 700 inhabitants, 277 were French Canadians. It appears that the name “Granbyen” was attributed to the local population, by Maurice Chevalier during a show he gave in 1950.
The city once bore the nickname of Princess of Estrie / Eastern regions and city of parks because of the sustained attention the municipal authorities take to keep the greenery and beauty of the landscape. Granby is part of the MRC of Haut-Yamaska and of the electoral circumscription of Saint-Hyacinthe.
Following the meal, a draw of a few prizes took place. Then about forty Ouellet-te boarded a bus to visit and admire the tourist attractions of Granby, city of parks and fountains.
Since the onset of the Club des 100, the following members have joined: Monique (2491, Rose-de-Lima (1301), Thérèse (898), Gérald (1870), Rosaire (1315), Roger (999), Ernest (819), Raoul (159), and myself Jeannine (2168). The responsible of  the Club des 100, Florent Ouellet from Lévis, awarded certificates to three new members, they are: Alphonse (1652), Richard (2567), Roger (2577) Thank you all for your generous support and sincere congratulations for your support to the Club des 100.
During the annual general assembly the following were re-elected or elected to the Board of Directors: Jeannine Ouellet from Rivière-du-Loup, Gisèle Ouellet from La Pocatière, Victoire Ouellet-Fortier from Saint-Romain, Alphonse Ouellet, director general, from Lévis, Richard Ouellette from Saint-Élie d’Orford, Florent Ouellet form Lévis, Jeanne-Mance Ouiellet-Gauthier from Valleyfield, Micheline Larose-Ouellet from Montréal-Nord,and Gérald Ouellet from Beloeil. Last but not least, a mass was celebrated as a token of our gratitude and to honour our ancestors at the Saint-Joseph church of Granby, by Gérald Ouellete. This memorable day will be inscribed in the annals of the Association des Ouellet-te d’Amérique.
A pleasant souvenir of this gathering will no doubt remain in the memory of all the participants.

Report of the 1999 gathering
The assembly took place the September 5th, at Kamouraska under the honorary president  Ernest Ouellet former mayor of Saint-Pascal-de -Kamouraska and former president of the Association.

33rd OUELLET-TE GATHERING, A HAPPY MEETING!

by Jeannine Ouellet (2168) president (1996-2000)

Following the magnificent feast that took place at Kamouraska, September 5th, the members of the Board of Directors, want to sincerely thank the population of Kamouraska for their support, their efficient collaboration and their participation in the festivities. We wish to thank particularly, Mrs. Magdeleine Michaud Bossé who was with us the whole day. We counted around 130 attendants from many regions of Québec, New Brunswick and Maine at the gathering, among them, the youngest members David 12 years old and Pascal 15 years old, both nephew and godchild of the President. The oldest attendant was Marie Suchet, 96 years of age from Montreal, Monette Ouellet and Emile Briand from La Pocatière, celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, were also present.
The sun was shining its brilliance on us, this year again. The day took place under the honorary president M. Ernest Ouellet, former mayor of St Pascal de Kamouraska and former president of the Association for 5 consecutive years.
The reception at the Centre Communautaire, situated south of the Church, begins at 9 a.m., followed by a mass at the local parish church at 10 a.m. Back at the Centre communautaire, a wine was served to the participants. An auction was for the souls was organized especially for the occasion. A surprise awaited: the visit of Lord Aubert-de-la-Chesnaye and his spouse. They offered, to the President, a plaque bearing the impression of the text for the concession of the land to Mathurin René Hoûallet in 1695.
The Lord was well personified by M. Guy Drapeau director of the ancient Palais de justice. At noon, a succulent meal was served by Michel Lavoie caterer and owner of  Au palais fint. Our moral counsellor, Father Gérald Ouellet, parish priest of Saint Joseph de Granby, led us in singing the grace, with his well known joviality. During the buffet, the president Jeannine, gave a few historical notes of Kamouraska that are resumed here:
“It was towards the end of the XVIIth century that the name Kamouraska appeared in the Québec history, with the concession, in 1674 of the domain of Kamouraska to Olivier Morel de la Durantaye, a nobleman in the colony since 1655 and commandant of one of six companies of marine corps, then stationed in Québec. He owned and was already running the domain of the Durentaye situated between the domains Beaumont and Bellechasse. Many different spelling were found and the most common were Camouraska, Cap Mouraska, Kamourascheka. In 1681, there were only one inhabitant in Kamouraska, not a true farmer since the zoning was not yet done, but more or less a fisherman, or a hunter, a smuggler, or who knows, the pioneer of tourism. In 1703, there were approximately twenty families on the thirty three franchise holders who had obtained their land from Lord Charles-Aubert-de-la-Chenaye. Kamouraska meaning “There is some bulrush on the shores of the river” became a religious parish in 1709. The first and the second church will be erected in the historic place “Le Berceau”. In 1791 the church was built on its present location.
Between 1694 and 1712, thirty-six concessions were granted. Mathurin René Houâllet, farmer of Rivière-Ouelle, is the third to obtain a land situated south west of the last brook of little Kamouraska, the same day as his neighbour Mathurin Dubé. In 1713, steward Bégon forced Mathurin Ouellet to pay rent for the pews he occupies in church, failing this the pews could be removed. Mathurin died between  August 1st,1717 and February 7th, 1719.
In 1723, his son Augustin Ouallet was living on the second farm east of the road leading to the village St-Germain The same year, the widow Mathurin Oûallet is also the owner of a land of eight acres in width. Her third neighbour west is her son Fançois Oûallet who owns a land of about four acres.
Thérèse Mignot dit Châtillon, second wife of René Hoûallet is buried in Kamouraska December 5th, 1728.
In 1733, of fifty families in Kamouraska, six bear the name Ouellet, they are those of François, Alexis, Jean, Augustin, Joseph, and François. Unfortunately, due to the disappearance of the original records, the first act is dated July 8, 1727.
From 1732 to 1984 (252 years), 179 marriages of man bearing the patronymic Ouellet and 166 marriages of woman bearing the name of Ouellet, were celebrated. Ten marriages united two spouses Ouellet. Nine generations of Ouellet have resided in Kamouraska. Seven members of Ouellet families have acted as church councillors from 1723 to 1887. Some Ouellet still live in Kamouraska.
In 1813, Joseph Bouchette, evaluator of land, declares that Kamouraska is famous for its healthy climate. Sixty years later, Arthur Buies journalist, affirms that to go to the salt water means going to Kamouraska. This year, the residents of Kamouraska celebrated the 325th year of existence of their domain.

Florent Ouellet from Levis, responsible for the Club des 100 ( $100.00 donation) presented honour certificates to three new members:, : Adrien from Saint-Mathieu 468), Yvon from Hull (2610) and Fernand from Saint-Rock des Aulnais (1881). The following are already members since the foundation of the club. They are: Monique (2491), Rose-de-Lima (1301), Thérèse (898), Gérald (2432), Réjean (1870), Rosaire (1315), Roger (999), Ernest (819), Alphonse (1652), Richard (2567), Roger (2577), and myself Jeannine (2168). Thank you all for your generosity and congratulations for your support to this club.
Our Association has finally successfully launched a much expected first edition of its dictionary of Ouellet-te, Ouellon et Willets. The author, Richard Ouellet from Montréal presented the fruit of his work, done in collaboration with Richard Ouellet (2567) from Saint-Élie d’Orford, with information collected from various records. The volume holds a total of 59 970 first names. At the end of the meal, a raffle was held for a few gifts of presence.
The following members were re-elected or elected during the general annual assembly: Victoire Ouellet-Fortier from Saint- Romain, Alphonse Ouellet, director general, from Lévis, Richard Ouellette from Saint-Élie d’Orford, Florent Ouellet from Lévis, and Ferdinand Ouellet form Saint-Rock des Aulnaies. All were previously named to the Board of Directors, except the latter.
The following were elected the previous year, Jeannine Ouellet from Rivière-du-Loup, Gisèle Ouellet from La Pocatière, Micheline Larose-Ouellet from Montréal North, Gérald Ouellette from Beloeil. Congratulations to all. Eighty eight members boarded two buses for a visit of seven parishes of the domain of Kamouraska.
This memorable day will once more be recorded in the annals of the Association des Ouellet-te d’Amerique. Without a doubt, the souvenir of this gathering will remain, a long in time, in the memory of the participants.

14th National congress of Bourges

From the 8 to May 11, 1997, was held in Bourges, in France, the 14th national congress of genealogy. Our president, Jeannine Ouellet was present there.

I had the immense joy of assisting in XIVe Congrès national of genealogy, in Bourges, sovereign city of 80 000 inhabitants, to two hundred trente-cinq kilometers in the south of Paris, in full heart of France. More than thousand congressmen of which a hundred and ten québécois took part in the various activities envisaged with the program. Among them, were present Esther Taillon and Guy Saint-Hilaire, president and vice-president of the québécoise Federation of the companies of genealogy, Rénald Lessard, of the Public records, Gerard Bouchard, Hubert Charbonneau, Denis Beauregard, Jacques-Yvan Morin, Aurélien Boivin, Marcel Fournier... Quebec had been the guest of honor for the first time for twenty-eight years. Were present : la Fédération québécoise des sociétés de généalogie, les Archives nationales, l'Association Québec-France et France-Québec, la Fédération des familles-souches et la Société généalogique canadienne-française.

The topic of the congress: " the tree and the book ", the tree, being the symbol of the genealogy and the source of communication by the production of paper and the book, remayning the principal information carrier in spite of the technological developments of communication. In the program, appeared of the conferences, workshops and communications. Seventy stands of various genealogical associations, with professionals working in all the fields related to the genealogy. Our lecturers québécois dealt with " the French-speaking genealogy on Internet ", " the evolution of the genealogy in Quebec ", " the old and current population of Quebec ", " the toponymy of Quebec, a geographical genealogy ", " the bank computerized (parchment) on the notarial acts of Quebec and France ", " an immigration ignored, false salt makers in News-France ", " the French origin of Québécois ", " Maria Chapdelaine of Louis Hémon through the files ". Among the topics approached by our French cousins, one retains: the republican calendar, the drafting and publication of a family monograph, onomastics, the heraldic one, genetics, popular speech, search in Paris and in France, various information on the genealogy in certain countries of Europe, Africa and America and in some French areas... Among the exposures, we could admire that presented by the Company of genealogy of the Cantons of the east " the genealogy to Quebec ".

We were pleasantly invited to various receptions, that of the general Council of Cher for the presidents of the French genealogical circles and the congressmen québécois, that of the mayor to the town hall of Bourges, that of the general Delegate of Quebec in France, Marcel Masse. Were presented a conference concert of Jean Girard and a play in an act of Ernest Doin, one musician, the other author, born in Bourges and died in Montreal. A guided tour of the old town of Bourges made it possible to discover the cathedral Saint-Étienne, the Palate Jacques Coeur, several buildings centenaires with wood sides... through streets with evocative names: Victor Hugo, Molière, Emile Zola, J Rimbault, Parmentier, of the Virtues, of the Green Cage, Carries Yellow, of the Flowered Meadows, Deschamps,, Joyeuse...

Laughing natural which offered already the its coat of greenery and flowers, in all their magnificence, decorated our stay in soft France, mother-fatherland of our ancestors. During three days, Bourges was the center of the World of the Genealogy. The next French genealogical appointment will take place from the 13 to May 16, 1999, in Brittany, in Brest, the city of the sea, under the topic: " Ancestors and Identity ".
