Francis Rowe joined the meteorologist service of Canada during World War II. When Torbay airport came under civilian control after the end of the war he was appointed officer in charge of the meteorological office there, a post he held until retirement in 1980. A numismatist and philatelist, his valuable collection of rare paper money, coins, tokens and medals is now deposited in the Newfoundland Museum. His collection of Newfoundland stamps lacked (in 1922) only two stamps for completion. He has also a wide collection of other Newfoundland items, such as books, maps and other articles. Rowe has written and done broadcasts on these collections and has exhibited at the Canadian Numismatic Convention Exhibition in Toronto, winning the "Best in the Show"award in 1982. He also exhibited at the First International Paper Money Congress, held in Toronto, and has displayed the collection at the national currency museum in Ottawa, the Nickel Arts Museum, University of Calgary and the Vancouver Centennial museum. Rowe is co-author of Coins and Currency of Newfoundland in the Canadian Numismatic History Series. Chairman of the Anglican Cathedral restoration committee from 1971 to 1985 and Peoples Warden from 1974 to 1987. He wrote Fields Afar, a historical review of the Anglican Parish of St. John's and its Cathedral. In 1992 he was archivist and historian for the Cathedral. Rowe is a fellow of the Canadian Numismatic Research Society, a member of the Canadian Numismatic Society, the Philatelic Society of Canada and an honorary life member of the St. John's Philatelic Society. He was awarded the Queens Silver Jubilee Medal in 1977. |
