as found in the Registry of Deeds & Wills
(This information was contributed by Leslie A. Winsor, director - NLGS)

I was at the Regisry of Deeds a few days ago and checked the Northern District Court Records for the Rowe name hoping to find a will, but there were none from 1828 - 1888. The two grants to Henry and Benjamin show up, and also a William B. Rowe who had land in Harbour Grace in 1832, and in Brigus and Bell Island between 1841 and 1846.

In Misc. Will and Deeds from 1744 - 1860 there was the following:

Vol. 2 Fol. 79 - 1800 11 07 - Elias Rowe of St. John's, Merchant, sold a farm named the Goatery to Commander Harry Folkes Edgell.

Vol. 2 Fol. 89 - 1801 - Elias Rowe of St. John's sold a house, wharf, etc. to Andrew Thomas and Company.

Vol. 2 Fol. 161 - 1804 03 14 - Thomas Row and William Tucker Row of Shaldon, Parish of Saint Nichlas, Co. Devon, gave authorization to Samuel Prowse to act on their behalf.

Vol. 3 Fol. 231 - 1806 - John Row of Saint John was attirney for Henry Codner.

Vol. 13 Fol. 29 - Note this was Row in the index, but turned out to be Hezekiah Rose, and Edward O'Neal of Western Bay who had a fishing plantation cut out of the woods since 1783. There are Roses in Western Bay today. I can see a bit of confusion between Rose, and Rowes, or Rows.

Vol. 17 Fol. 400. - 1806 05 01 - Francis Pike Sr. sold land at the upper part of Carbonear to Henry Rowe. Bound on the North by the brook, and the south by the main Road, and 110 yards in lenght. This would possibly be the land granted to Henry Rowe c. 1831. Both the grants to Henry Rowe and Benjamin Rowe were on land that Francis Pike Sr. owned at one time.
