This is a special dessert which I made for the Ottawa Science Fiction Society's New Year's Eve party for the beginning of 2001. It is, of course, alluding to 2001: a Space Odyssey. At midnight, as 2001 began, I started Also Sprach Zarathustra playing, and we started eating it.
The Monolith itself is two thin slabs of chocolate brownie, stuck together with a peppermint filling. The base is meringue, topped with bits of "candy blocks" that were run through a blender to create rocks, gravel, and dust for the "lunar surface".
The trick to keeping it upright is the wooden base hidden under the meringue, with a pair of heavy wires pointing upwards, imbedded in the peppermint layer between the brownie layers.
