Anti-Valentine's Apple Pie
I was invited to this anti-Valentine's day party, see... the general principle of which was that those of us in the social group who were single and grumpy about it would get together and not be romantic. People were to bring munchies, and something Valentine-related to mutilate... or possibly both at once.
5 medium apples
1/2 to 3/4 c "cinnamon hearts" candy
ground cloves, dash
double crust for 10" pie
Peel, core, and coarsely chop apples into mixing bowl. Add cinnamon hearts, a handful at a time, to an old-fashioned hand-cranked meat grinder, and pulverize them thoroughly, with much ceremony. Mix with apples, along with cloves. If you're using tart apples, you may wish to add a bit of sugar as well. Pour into bottom crust in deep 10" pie pan; cover with top crust (optionally cut as a lattice; otherwise, cut a few slits for steam). Bake at 350°F for about 45 minutes, until lightly browned.
The flavour has a definite chemical-cinnamon component from the candy, but it's not too bad -- and the colour of the filling is a rather gory red.
