REVIEW OF THE OCTOBER 2002 ISSUE OF THE TRIZ-JOURNAL

This month TRIZ-journal published an inspiring article by Martin Hyatt [1], which, inter alia, claims that everything in the world can be modelled with the help of metaphors. For example, creative thinking, due to Mr. Hyatt, can be characterized by the following metaphors:
- Creative thinking as perceiving;
- Creative thinking as moving;
- Creative thinking as object manipulation.
I decided to follow this novel approach and search for metaphors that best characterize TRIZ-journal itself. Here are the ones that seem to be most relevant.

Metaphor #1: TRIZ-journal as an impostor.

Indeed, who of the authors of TRIZ endorsed it ? Nobody.

Metaphor #2: TRIZ-journal as a garbage can.

Articles which would ended up in a garbage basket of any serious journal, are published in TRIZ-journal.

Metaphor #3: TRIZ-journal as a lakey of the TRIZ-mafia.

It rejects articles critical of the views of established "TRIZ"-mafiosi.

Metaphor #4: TRIZ-journal as a source of disinformation

Nobody can get educated in TRIZ by reading TRIZ-journal. I receive complaints to this effect from various people on a regular basis.

Metaphor #5: TRIZ-journal as all but TRIZ journal

Indeed what of the real TRIZ does it publish?

Metaphor #6: TRIZ-journal as almost a theater of one actor

Of Dr. Darrell Mann.

Metaphor #7: TRIZ-journal as a change machine.

It changes tiny slabs of thought by endless streams of words.

Metaphor #8: TRIZ-journal is good for nothing

This is a corollary metaphor. It follows from all the above ones.

(A more elaborate review of Dr. Hyatt's metaphorical approach will be published in a separate article. The rest of the October issue does not deserve attention but we, nevertheless, post some critical notes on new ideas of Dr. Mann as well.)
