INTRODUCTION

Greenshields may be found in land records for Lanarkshire, Scotland as early as the fourteenth century. This ancient Scottish family was concentrated in the Douglas-Lesmahagow-Libberton area and has produced a number of fairly prominent and colourful characters around the world. Recent researchers have also been intrigued to find references to legendary British King "Brutus Greenshield"(c. 957 B.C.) My own branch is perhaps the least illustrious, but I have still enjoyed tracking my Greenshields through various vital statistics and census records.

A number of distant cousins have contributed to this genealogy, but for much of my Greenshields research, I am indebted to Wendy Greenshields of Weymouth, Dorset, England who is preparing a one-name study and who would be thrilled to hear from anyone connected to this family. Her e-mail address is: wendy.greenshields@virgin.net Wendy is working in conjunction with Gordon Greenshields of Glasgow, Scotland available at: gord@greensh.fsnet.co.uk

The following genealogy represents members of my branch of the Greenshields, although I have tried to avoid inclusion of more recent generations. If you find any other omissions or errors, and I expect that there will be some, especially in the earlier generations, please contact me at karen.black@sympatico.ca  I am living in Toronto, Canada. For those of you who are primarily interested in Greenshields who have immigrated to Canada, you may also wish to contact Charles Dobie of Ontario, Canada at cdobie@superaje.com   This genealogy is intended for personal use only and should not be reproduced without permission from the compilers.

Douglas-Poniel-Scrogtonhead

                                     Circa 1895

1. Robert1 GREENSHIELDS, born in Poniel?, Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland; died abt. 1693 in "Wastoune of Lesmahago Pouneill, " Lanark, Scotland. He married Elizabeth "Bessie"MUIR.

Notes for Robert GREENSHIELDS

No. 66 of the "The Particular Index to the Register of Sasines, Vol. 1, 1618-1720, places Robert and his wife in "East Powniel of Lesmahagow" during the years 1671 to 1709. He was also a portioner of "Kirktoune of Douglas." The linkages in the family are difficult to prove, but information provided by Wendy Greenshields indicates that Robert may be my earliest known Greenshields ancestor. The lands of Poniel were in both Douglas and Lesmahagow Parish Douglas Parish. Here is some of the more recent history relating to the ownership of Poniel: The lands of Poniel were in both Douglas and Lesmahagow Parishes. The Weir family was the 17th century owner of Poniel. Robert Greenshields' son Thomas married Margaret Weir, but it is not clear how closely she was related to the Weirs of Poniel. The Greenshields were also connected to Poniel: Robert, in Poneill (East Powneill of Lesmahagow, Poneill of Lesmachago), portioner of Kirktoune of Douglas and his son William in Nether Ponneill, Poneill of Lesmahagow. Here is some of the more recent history relating to Poniel: "It is probable that on the forfeiture of the estates of the Douglas family in 1455, the monks of Lesmahagow would claim possession of their ancient land of Polnele within the parish, and when the barony of Douglas was restored to George, fourth Earl of Angus, in 1457, the farm of Poniel, on the south side of Douglas water, would pass with it, while Poniel quarter, being within the parish of Lesmahagow, would not be included in the restoration. All traces of the monk's possession are lost, but the Weirs of Blackwood had obtained possession of it towards the close of the sixteenth century. In 1587, William Weir of Stonebyres gave his bond of man-rent 'anent the slaughter of the deceased John Weir of Poneill, son lawful of James Weir of Blakwode, and hurting of James Reid, son-in-law to the said James, to the great effusion of his blude.' In 1636, Master Walter Weir was served heir to his father, Master William of Poniel. Poniel, which was a five merk land, was afterwards acquired by the adjoining proprietor, Lockhart of Birkhill. In what precise year Birkhill was acquired by him is not known, but in 1644 John Douglas of Birkhill was on of the committee of war for the country. (Act Parl., vi 132.) And in 1656, William Douglas of Birkhill's name appears in the Session Records. There is extant a charter by the superior, George Weir of Blakwode, with consent of William Lawrie, his father in favour of Robert Lockhart of Birkhill, "of the lands of Pouneill, Birkhill, and Grafthill", dated 1665. (Kerse Charter Chest.) He was a younger son Stevin Lockhart of Wicketshaw, in Carluke parish, and a zealous Covenanter. He fought at Bothwell Bridge, where he had a horse shot under him, and avoided capture by concealing himself among the branches of a tree. His friends, who were debating about singing a psalm, were taken prisoners. Lockhart was forfeited, but the attainder was annulled by the general Act of 1690. In 1696, his son William was served heir to him in the 40s. land of Birkhill, the 6s. 8d. land of Grafthill, and two merk land of Fauldhouse and Helsbyk, part of the 20 land of Fockertoune. (Spec. Inquis., 430.) Mr Lockhart built a house at Fauldhouse but took his style from Birkhill. In 1764, during the minority of William Lockhart, afterwards General Lockhart, and John Lockhart, afterwards the Rev. Dr Lockhart of Glasgow, there was a discreet of sale of the land of Birkhill, and the 6s. 8d. land of Grasshill, in favour of Thomas Tod, writer in Lanark, acting for creditors. The lands of Birkhill were almost immediately afterwards sold to Mr Fullarton of Carstairs and subsequently to Mr Marshall of Chapelton. The lands of Fauldhouse were purchased by John Smith, Esq., the grandfather of the present proprietor, and the lands of Westown of Poniel, by James Greenshields, Esq. of Auchinhestening, in Dumfriesshire, a native of Lesmahagow, whose representatives is John Greenshields of Kerse." Notes for Elizabeth "Bessie" MUIR

The index to the Register of Sasines, 1618-1720, identifies Elizabeth as "Bessie Muir," spouse of Robert Greenshields.

Children of Robert1 GREENSHIELDS and Elizabeth "Bessie" MUIR were as follows:

+ 2 i John2 GREENSHIELDS, born in Poniel? Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland. He married (1)Marion GREENSHIELDS?.; married (2) Jannet INGLIS.

+ 3 ii William2 GREENSHIELDS, born abt. 1678 in Poniel, Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland. He married Christian GREENSHIELDS.

Generation 2

2. John2 GREENSHIELDS (Robert1), born in Poniel? Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland. He married (1) Marion GREENSHIELDS?. He married (2) on 16 May 1706 in Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland,Jannet INGLIS.

Notes for John GREENSHIELDS

John was described in No. 68 of "The Index to Particular Register of Sasines for Sheriffdom of Lanark, Vol. 2, 1721-1780" as a "portioner of Nethertoun of Poneill (in Nether Pnneill, Nethertoun of Ponniel, Nethertown, Tounhead of Netherponneill), XIII, 282, 285, 287; XVI, 79, 240; XVII, 152, 331, 393; this record also identifies his wife as Janet Inglis. He may have subscribed to a work of philosophy in 1737 called "Prima; the first things, in reference to the middle and last things (6th ed.), 1737, by Ambrose, Isaac, Glasgow. John's address was given as "Powniel." (Source: www.ancestry.com's Biography Database 1680-1830) John, Christian, and William Greenshields were all servants at "Pouneill" during the 1695 Lesmahagow Poll Tax. Although John evidently moved to Douglas sometime after his marriage to Janet Inglis, he is believed to be the same person. William and Christian must have remained at Pouniells or Poniel; all their children were born there. Our ancestor Thomas is believed to be the oldest child of John's marriage to Janet Inglis. Thomas remained in Douglas.

Notes for Marion GREENSHIELDS?

Another tentative link. But I think it possible that Marion was the first of this John Greenshields' two wives. To add to the confusion, the Greenshields surname was not spelled consistently in the OPR & in some cases, the mother's name was either partial or missing.

Notes for Jannet INGLIS

Aka Jonet Ingles. May be the sister of William and John Inglis who was having children at Scrogtonhead at the same time.

3. William2 GREENSHIELDS (Robert1), born abt. 1678 in Poniel, Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland. He married Christian GREENSHIELDS, born abt. 1680.

Notes for William GREENSHIELDS

No. 66 of "The Particular Index to the Register of Sasines, 1618-1720," identifies William as the son of Robert G. in "East Powneill" during the period of 1685-1719. William, Christian and John Greenshields were all employed as servants at Pouneill or Poniel, Lesmahagow at the time of the 1695 Lesmahagow Poll Tax. William and Christian probably stayed and raised their family; John left with Janet Inglis sometime after his marriage.

38 viii Margaret3 GREENSHIELDS, born 1733.

5. Mary2 GREENSHIELDS (Robert1) married John LOCKHART.

Notes for Mary GREENSHIELDS

Possible daughter of Robert Greenshields and Bessie Muir, based on the fact that she and John Lockhard had a son in Poniel in 1724.

Children of Mary2 GREENSHIELDS and John LOCKHART were as follows:

 39 i John3 LOCKHART, born 1724.

6. Catherine2 GREENSHIELDS (Robert1) married John DUBSON?.

Notes for Catherine GREENSHIELDS

Possible daughter of Robert and Janet (Inglis) Greenshields as she had at least one daughter in Poniel in the right time frame.

Notes for Thomas GREENSHIELDS

Thomas, who married Jean Wier, is assumed to be the son of John Greenshields & Janet Inglis, but this is unverified. To complicate matters, a John Greenshields & Marion Inglis were also having children in Douglas around the same time. Thomas remained in Douglas after his father left for Lesmahagow. It is not known when Scrogtonhead Farm became associated with this branch of the Greenshields, but this probably happened during Thomas' life time. His children's baptismal registers identify him as "Thomas of Scrogtonhead."

Notes for James GREENSHIELDS

James Greenshields, a tenant at Scrogtonhead, evidently subscribed to a religious document in 1766. This document was identified as "An Exposition of the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans, with large Practical Observations; Delivered in Several Lectures, by the late Reverend, learned, pious and faithful servant of , Mr. John Brown, sometime Minister of the Gospel at Wamphray in Annandale, and afterwards Minister to the Scots Congregation at Rotterdam in Holland. Carefully printed from the Author's own Manuscript, 1766, Edinburgh." James' brothers William and John Greenshields, also of Scrogtonhead, also subscribed to this book 1766. (Source: www.ancestry.com's Biography Database 1680-1830) By the mid 1700s, both our ancestor James and his older brother William were living with their wives and children at Scrogtonhead Farm in Douglas, Lanark, Scotland. The farm is still occupied.  Scrogtonhead Farm is a low, white stoned building with a black roof and an attached barn or byre, very typical of seventeenth century Scotland. Our branch of the Greenshields lived there well into the 1800s.

Notes for James GREENSHIELDS

Cause of Death: Cystirrhoea. Death reported by John Greenshields of Back Row, Leadhills. Parents names included.. James’ children John, Thomas & Jane appear to have been born before their parents' 1831 marriage. None of these children or their siblings appear in the OPR, although John is the only who isn't listed with his parents in at least one Douglas census 1841-1861. Which dates, if any, are incorrect? Or are John, Thomas & Jane the children of a prior union? Both a John & Jane Greenshields (ages 14 & 8 respectively) are living with Agnes Clarkson, age 67 & Thomas Thomson, age 36 during the 1841 Census (#2, p.10). Thomas, age 12 & James, age 2, are living with their parents. By 1851, however, James Greenshields, age 12, is living with a man identified as his uncle, the aforementioned Thomas Thomson, now age 47 (#1,p.38-39) & Jane, age 19, is back home with her siblings Ann C., 8; George, 4, Mary Ann, 8 days and their parents. As for John, he is probably the 24 year old nephew living with Mary Ann Greenshields, age 36 on Main Street, Douglas in 1851 (#2, p.11).

Scattered as his family was, James contributed to their support by working as a cotton weaver. During his time, working class women and children over the age of 11 were usually employed, too. To accommodate these working parents, younger children were frequently cared for by their grandparents. The grandparents remained in their own homes as long as possible and then moved in with their adult children.

Notes for Jane or Jean BALLANTYNE

Cause of Death: Bronchitis. Parents' names confirmed on death register. Age 70 when she died. Death also reported be son John.. Her name given as Jane Greenshields (Ballantyne) on her death reg. and as Jean Bannatyne on her husband's. Although her assigned parents appear to have been too old when she was born, there is no other record of a George Ballantyne marrying Agnes Clarkson.

Children of James6 GREENSHIELDS and Jane or Jean BALLANTYNE were as follows:

260 i John7 GREENSHIELDS, born abt. 1827 in Douglas, Lanarkshire, Scotland; died 13 Aug 1890 in Leadhills, Lanark, Scotland. He married on 9 Sep 1859 in Crawford, Lanark, Scotland,Grace or Grizzel MENZIES, born 15 Nov 1826 in Leadshill, Lanark, Scotland; died 19 Apr 1910. No issue.

Notes for Hugh GREENSHIELDS

After Hugh Greenshields died young, Agnes Pate is reported to have returned to the family farm (Scrogtonhead?) before marrying again, and having another six sons and a daughter. Notes for John TODD

Kristina Magill (kam1242@home.com) writes: "My ancestry has a John Tod (b about 1790) in Scotland and came to Canada as a factor for the Hudsons Bay Company..he died 1882 in Victoria, Bristish Columbia. Of interest is a book chronicling his life JOHN TOD REBEL IN THE RANKS, by Robert C. Belyk, published 1995 (available here at Amazon). It has considerable information re Greenshields connection, as John Tod left his young daughter with a Samuel Greenshields, who came to Montreal about 1824." Wendy Greenshields read the story of JOHN TOD REBEL IN THE RANKS and in Jan. 2001, she wrote: "There is much written about John's exploits as a fur trader, opening up new trading stations, his irascible nature and his squabbles with his superiors, that held up his promotion to being a chief trader. As an investment for his retirement he had bought a farm, which his younger brother Sym managed for him with the help of John's son James. To his horror, though, his parents and sisters decide to emigrate to join Sym on the farm, and he felt duty bound to subsidise, while entreating his friend Edward Ermatinger not to introduce them to polite society, especially his mother. He claimed to be ashamed of their poverty, although as clerk to the local cotton weaving factory in Bonhill in Dunbarton, his father was of some consequence in that town. They were not rich like the Greenshields cousins, although they were able to send a younger son to university. Maybe the Greenshields funded that, you never know. However, it seems that his mother was the real sticking point. When his stubborn nature (had) lost him a job in Glasgow, his mother reduced him to tears by calling him a ne'er do well, and he had to be comforted by his father. So when an uncle wrote to him telling him of vacancies for apprentices with the Hudson Bay Co., it was partly to escape his mother. The book describes her as having a vitriolic tongue. Maybe she was choked off at the comparative riches of her half brothers' sons. Anyway, we now know that Jean Greenshields and her husband and children mostly ended up and died in Canada. 455 v John Primrose8 GREENSHIELDS, born 20 Nov 1859 in Quebec, Canada. He married on 6 Aug 1885 in Shenandoah, Iowa, United States, Allie A.ARMSTRONG, born Nov 1861 in Illinois, United States. JOHN P. GREENSHIELDS " Among the businessmen of Council Bluffs who have achieved prominence as men of marked ability and substantial worth is John P. Greenshields, of the well known real estate firm of Greenshields & Everest Company, and vice president of the First National Bank. He was born in the province of Quebec, Canada, November 20, 1859, and there spent the first eighteen years of his life, his education being acquired in the schools of the province. His parents were John and Margaret (Naismith) Greenshields, both of whom were natives of Scotland and in childhood removed to Canada with their respective parents, the families coming to the new world at the same time. Believing that the United States furnished better opportunities for the ambitious young man, Mr. Greenshields came to Iowa in 1877, and first located in Essex, Page County, where he obtained a position as clerk in a little general store, remaining there three or four years. At the end of that time he returned to Canada and went upon the road as salesman for a Montreal house dealing in hats and furs, in whose employ he remained for about four years. He next went to Chicago and secured employment with a clothing firm, opening branch stores in various cities, and so continued for a year. Going to Anthony, Kansas, he there embarked in the real estate business on his own account and for a time conducted a clothing store at that place. It was in 1886 that he left there and came to Council Bluffs and soon afterward opened a real estate office in this city. He has since carried on business here along that line with marked success and also given considerable attention to insurance, writing a large number of policies each year. Mr. Greenshields was married in Shenandoah, Iowa, August 6, 1885, to Miss Allie A. Armstrong, a daughter of the late John Armstrong, and to them ware born four children, but Jeanette is the only one now living. The others were: Chester, who died at the age of nine years; Fay, who died in infancy; and James, who was a twin brother of Jeanette and also died in infancy. In religious faith Mr. Greenshields is a Presbyterian and in his social relations is a member of the Masonic Order and the Elks. Politically he is identified with the Republican Party, but does not care for the honors or emoluments of public office, preferring to donate his entire time and attention to his business affairs, in which he has been more than ordinarily successful, though for one term he served as alderman of Council Bluffs. It is though his own unaided efforts that he has arisen to a place of prominence in the commercial world, for he began his business career as a clerk in a country store, but being energic, industrious and a man of sound judgment he has steadly prospered as the years have gone by until he is now the head of a large and lucrative business and is vice president of the First National Bank of Council Bluffs." Following in his brother's footsteps, R.A.E. Greenshields was educated at Danville Academy; St. Francis College, Richmond, Quebec and McGill Univ., B.A. 1883, B.C.L., 1885, LL.D. He also received from Bishop's College Univ., Lennoxville, Quebec, hon. D.C.L.; Univ. of Montreal, Quebec, hon. LL.D. R.A.E. Greenshields was Chief Justice, Superior Court, Quebec since 1929; called to the Bar of Montreal 1885; K.C. 1896; practised in Montreal in partnership with his brother; and often successfully pleaded before the Judicial Committee of the P.C.; was a liberal in politics and a personal friend of former prime minister Sir Wilfred Laurier; appointed a puisne judge, Superior Court of Quebec, 6 Jul 1910. He was also chancellor of Bishop's College Univ., Lennoxville, Quebec and awarded the Queen's Jubilee Medal. He believed that to the most superficial observer it was clear that we were coming to a new synthesis of man and nations; also that we may not have been much better than those who came before us, but if modern labs, universities and libraries had served their purpose, we ought to be have been able to avoid the pitfalls of the past. Notes for Jane GREENSHIELDS

Cause of Death: Bronchitis

Notes for James RODGER

James' 1824 birth was estimated from Old Parochial Birth Registers for daughters daughters Mary Ann Greenshields & Catherine Wells Rodger. His place of birth was also obtained from these registers. 1825 birth est. from 1861 Census. Bros. David/Dan'l (1820, )Robt. (1832); Andrew (1816)? Marriage register purchased through Old Parochial Records indicates banns were published for three days around marriage date. Couple probably married in early 1853, as indicated by the pedigree chart prepared by John Wilson & Co. in Glasgow, Scotland, for the 1968 James Greenshields estate. In addition to providing information about the surviving descendants of the Rodger/Greenshields family, this pedigree chart indicates that Jane Greenshields' parents were James Greenshields & Jane Ballantyne. No information was provided about James Rodger or his antecendents. But possibly his parents were Hugh Rodger & Elizabeth Crawford. Hugh Rodger had been born in Old Monkland about 1781, so more information about the Rodger family may be found there. During James Rodger's time, the coal pits employed most of the local men in Lanarkshire. But the pits also killed. James Rodger's oldest son, Hugh, apparently died in one. Some time after Hugh's death, James traded in his job as a coalminer for one as a ploughman, but it must have been too late. James died of bronchitis, his lungs damaged by coal dust. He had lived all his married life in Douglas. Cause of Death: Bronchitis

Children of Jane7 GREENSHIELDS and James RODGER were as follows:

486 i Hugh8 RODGER, born 1854 in Dalserf, Lanark, scotland; died 3 Jul 1882 in New Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, Scotland. He married on 31 Dec 1875 in Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland,Jane WILSON, born 1852 in Broughton, Peebles, Scotland.

Cause of Death: Coal mining mishap. The pedigree prepared for the James Greenshields estate in 1968 states that Hugh was killed in the pits. His death register indicates that he developed septicaemia after amputation for an injury to his thigh and that he died twelve days later.

487 ii Mary Ann Greenshields8 RODGER, born 13 Aug 1855 in Brockley, Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland; died abt. 1921 in Scotland. She married on 8 Jun 1875 in Douglas, Lanarkshire, Scotland, William TODD, born 1855 in Carstairs, Lanark, Scotland. Mary Ann's birth register Her birth register confirms she was the second born child of people who already had one living son. She was born at 2 a.m. James Rodger, who had been born in Douglas, was a 31 yr old labourer at Coal Works; Jane (nee Greenshields), who was 23, had also been born in Douglas. Her parents had married in 1853.

488 iii James8 RODGER, born 26 Jul 1857 in Douglas, Lanark, Scotland; died 1863.

489 iv Catharine Wells8 RODGER, born 7 Jun 1860 in Little Galla, Wiston, Lanark Co., Scotland; died 5 Apr 1936 in 4 Home Street, Lanark, Lanark Co., Scotland; buried in Shotts, Lanark Co., Scotland. She married on 27 Feb 1880 in St. Bride's, Douglas, Lanark, Scotland,Thomas BROWN, born 3 Jun 1855 in Middleholm, Lesmahagow, Lanark Co., SCT; died 5 Jan 1910 in 7 Knowhead, Stane, Cambusnethan, District of Calderhead, Lanark, SCT. Cause of Death: Old age In the 1993 IGI, "Catharine Willie Roger" (sic) is listed as having been born in Wiston, the daughter of James Roger and Jane Greenshields. According to her birth register, she was also born in Wiston, at 10 a.m or p.m. Her name appears there as "Catharine Wellie Roger." However, in the 1891 Calderhead Census, she gives her age as 30 and her birth place as Douglas. Wiston is very close to Douglas. Her birth date corresponds to one my Aunt Rina Nicholson gave me. On her marriage certificate, she lists herself as an unmarried domestic servant whose usual residence is Douglas. In June 1996, we visited "Little Galla" in Wiston where Catherine had been born. On this occasion, we amended the spellings of these localities. Little Galla, which was built in 1834 by John Haddow, is perched 900 feet above sea level. The farm overlooks five hundred acres of hilly, sheep grazing land. The house, a low, grey building with an attached byre, is still standing. There are several additional buildings, housing machines and animals. The farm itself is not pretty, but the view is spectacular. The road to Little Galla goes through Wiston, a small hamlet comprised chiefly of Bed & Breakfasts. Beyond Little Galla, on a winding, one-track road lies the ancient village of Douglas. Catherine immigrated with two of her daughters to Canada about 1919, but she subsequently returned to the Shotts area of Scotland, probably to care for deceased daughter Nan's children. She also took in boarders. She died in a chronic care facility in the town of Lanark.

490 v Elizabeth Crawford8 RODGER, born 7 Apr 1862 in Douglas, Lanark, Scotland; died abt. 1932 in Scotland. She married in 1881 in Scotland, James BERTRAM. Elizabeth was visiting her sister Mary Ann Todd at the time of the 1881 British Census.

491 vi Thomas Greenshields Thomson8 RODGER, born abt. 6 Mar 1864 in Maybole, Ayr, Scotland; died abt. 1961. He married on 27 Nov 1885 in Douglas, Lanark, Scotland, SusanMILLIGAN. Thomas is a 17 yr old coalminer when he is living with his father during the 1881 Douglas census (641/5, p.22). His birth place is confirmed as Maybole, Ayr. Birth/death dates differ in Newlands letter (1863-1941). Indexed entries for the first five children in the family were found on the Internet version of Scots Origin, showing they had all been born in Douglas.

492 vii Agnes Clarkson Greenshields8 RODGER, born 8 Jan 1866 in Douglas, Lanark, Scotland; died 1964. She married on 9 Jun 1882 in Glenbuck, Muirhead, Ayrshire, Scotland,Joseph BELL

James is a 13 yr old stone breaker when he living with his parents during the 1881 Douglas census (641/5 p.22). He was born in Douglas.

494 ix John Greenshields8 RODGER, born 12 Mar 1870 in Douglas, Lanark, Scotland; died abt. 1936 in Scotland. He married on 1 Jul 1892 in Larkhall, Lanark, Scotland,Janet WinningGOLD. Living with his parents during the 1881 Douglas census. .

495 x William8 RODGER, born 22 Dec 1873 in Douglas, Lanark, Scotland. Living with his parents during the 1881 Douglas census. Pedigree prepared for James Greenshields estate indicates that William died unmarried.

His wife Helen ran a small grocery store, but George frequently had "his hand in the till." Helen may have thrown him out because he ended up in Blyth, Northumberland, England, where they were building a new coal mine. His daughter Annabella later re-established contact with her father and he found her brothers jobs.

(Sources:Canadian Men and Women of the Time1898 & 1912.)

Edward Greenshields is also profiled in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online" [Volume XIV] < www.biographi.ca > "GREENSHIELDS, EDWARD BLACK, businessman and art critic; b. 12 July 1850 in Montreal, eldest son of John Greenshields, a prominent dry goods merchant, and Elizabeth Black, daughter of the Reverend Edward Black*; m. 19 Oct. 1876, at Quebec, Eliza Eleanor Brodie Cook, daughter of the Reverend John Cook*, and they had two children; d. 22 April 1917 in Montreal. Edward Black Greenshields was educated at the High School of Montreal and at McGill College, where in 1869 he received a BA with first-class honours in mental and moral philosophy and won the Prince of Wales Medal. While a student, he had joined the 3rd Battalion Volunteer Militia Rifles and had seen active service during the Fenian raids of 1866. In 1868 he attended militia school and he became a second lieutenant the following year. He left the militia with the rank of captain on 12 Feb. 1875. Greenshields had begun his apprenticeship in the family wholesale dry goods firm, S. Greenshields, Son and Company, in 1869. Initially known as Samuel Greenshields and Son, the business had been established by his grandfather Samuel, a merchant from Glasgow, and his father, John, in 1833. Edward Black became a partner in 1876, head of the firm in 1888, and president of Greenshields Limited in 1903. He presided over the expansion of the business across Canada. By 1907 the company was the country wass largest supplier of both imported and domestic dry goods. It handled cottons, woollens, carpets, household furnishings, dress goods, and notions such as gloves, hosiery, and laces. In addition, it was the exclusive agent in Canada for several prestigious British and European manufacturers. A prominent businessman, Greenshields was active in the defence and promotion of his industry. Acting for textile-mill owners and shirt manufacturers, he lobbied the federal government on tariff policy and he served as president of the Montreal Wholesale Dry Goods Association in 1896. His stature within the Montreal business community is confirmed by his directorships in the Bank of Montreal, the Royal Trust Company, the Standard Life Assurance Company, the Ocean Accident Corporation, and the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. As president of the Montreal Board of Trade in 1892, he advocated honest government, the elimination of canal tolls, and a more equitable distribution of money to creditors under the Insolvent Act. He oversaw the completion of a new building for the board and the celebration of its 50th anniversary. By 1900 he was devoting less time to business and more to travel, leisure, and cultural and scholarly activities. He made numerous trips to various parts of Europe and the United States. He usually spent the winter months in Montreal and part of the summer in Cacouna or at Lake MemphrÉmagog. He enjoyed biking, motoring, sailing, golfing, and popular entertainments such as Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, minstrel shows, and musicals.

Greenshields’ interest in cultural activities is reflected in his attendance at numerous art shows, as well as in his visits to art galleries and museums. Like several of his Montreal contemporaries, such as Sir William Van Horne and Lord Strathcona [Smith], he was an avid art collector. Although the prominent businessmen who dominated the Art Association of Montreal (and art collecting in general in Montreal) had individual tastes, they placed emphasis on acquiring traditional works of the French and English academic schools, the Barbizon School, and the Hague School and demonstrated much less interest in the Impressionists. Greenshields was the foremost proponent of the Hague School in Canada. He promulgated his views through his own collecting, as a member of the exhibition committee of the Art Association (where he influenced the selection of paintings), and as an art scholar. He wrote two of the first major Canadian works of criticism on European art, The subjective view of landscape painting and Landscape painting and modern Dutch artists. Both books were devoted to promoting the Hague School and to dismissing Impressionism as having little lasting artistic value. Greenshields believed art to be the personal, mystical effect produced on the artist by nature. In his rather stolid, mainly unpublished, poetry this conception of art and nature is also an important theme. Therefore the Hague School’s romantic, subjective vision of nature, expressed through solid, usually sombre landscapes, struck an intellectual chord with Greenshields. The tranquil images of the countryside, devoid of obvious social tensions or conflicts, were also attractive to his aspiration, as a businessman, for social stability. Overall, his conceptualization of art was traditional and safe; his individual preferences were also financially sound investments. For him, there were no major contradictions between his views on art and his social status. Like many of his fellow businessmen, Greenshields promoted education. A prominent member of McGill University s board of governors from 1887 to 1917, he was its honorary treasurer from 1903 to 1910, during a period of financial crisis brought on by fires in two buildings. He was also a member of various committees of the board, and received an honorary lld in 1910.

As a result of his interests in art and literature Greenshields was more active in the intellectual life of the university than most of his colleagues on the board of governors. For example, in 1908 he published an article in the University Magazine on Canadian poet Charles Heavysege*. His cogent analysis of Heavysege as a poet of great insight and skill hampered by an inconsistent technique compares favourably with other critiques of the poet. A prominent member of Montreal’s Scottish community, Greenshields belonged to St Paul’s Presbyterian Church and to the St Andrew’s Society. The amount of time he devoted to the society appears to have been limited, however. Although elected vice-president in 1894 and president for 1895, he declined to act, explaining in his diary that he had no time for either job. He died in Montreal in 1917 following a four-month-long, heart-related illness. A speech given by Edward Black Greenshields as president of the Montreal Board of Trade on the occasion of its 50th anniversary was printed with its Report for 1892. His other publications are The subjective view of landscape painting, with special reference to J. H. Weissenbruch and illustrations from works of his in Canada (Montreal, 1904); Landscape painting and modern Dutch artists (Toronto, 1906); A forgotten poet, University Magazine (Montreal), 7 (1908): 34359; and Poems (Montreal, n.d.).
