Descendants of John PRENTICE, the Laird of Stane
Information
about my Prentice connection is rather sparse, so in addition to examining
the early parish registers and Sasines, I have made several educated guesses.
This genealogy is six generations. For information about more recent generations,

if you have anything to contribute.
Generation
No. 1
1. John1 PRENTICE died Abt. 1660.
Notes for
John PRENTICE:
Early marriage
registers for Cambusnethan, Lanark, Scotland, confirm several Prentice heads
of families during the mid-1600s, including Henry who married Janet Smallie,
Robert and "Prenteis, John...last servitor to James Waddel,in Middest of
Wadstone, par. of Cambusnethan, 5 Feb 1658." (Source: Commisariot of Glasgow
1547...1800). Henry, Robert and John may have been brothers.
The Prentices
probably came from England to Scotland with Oliver Cromwell. John Prentice,
later known as the Laird of Stone (Stane), resided in Cambusnethan, Scotland.
This "John Prentice...by extraordinary prowess and personal bravery, having
saved the life of (John) Lockhart, one of Cromwell's generals, was by him
presented with the lands of Thorn (in Carluke, Lanark, Scotland), at nominal
quit-rent, as an acknowledgment of his gratitude. He afterwards held a subordinate
office at Dunkirk (France), when that important fortress was reluctantly
yielded up by Lockhart at the restoration, so that he was among the last
who submitted to Charles the Second..." (Source: The Life of Alexander Reid,
Written by Himself and Edited by Archibald Prentice, His Great-Grandson,
3rd ed., Manchester, England, c.1822, rep. 1829; extracted from Archibald
Prentice's footnote, p.33.)
Other sources
also refer to the Laird of Thorn: "During the French/Spanish Wars of Succession,
Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector, sent, in June 1658, an expedition of 6,000
veteran English soldiers, under Marshall Turenne, and they defeated the Spanish
in the Battle of the Dunes, capturing the port of Dunkirk, which was then
put under siege by the Spanish. From what we are told in the Black Book,
Sir John Prentice played an important role in this campaign, ending up as
Deputy Governor of the Fortress of Dunkirk. He died shortly after the Siege
of Dunkirk, so we estimate his death as about 1660. We have been unable to
discover his marriage, but it appears that Sir John Prentice had at least
one son: James Prentice [H.1] [Chart 19A], born about 1630. He did not long
survive his father, so we estimate the latter's death as about 1665." Source:
[Normand, William John (1831-1913), Black Book: An Account of the Normand,
Hill, Prentice and Russell Families [Christopher Normand < cnormand@home.3b.co.uk
> (Surrey, England).
The property
referred to as Thorn and one known as Thornmuir, are now in ruins. A place
called Thorn Cottages still exists in the rural area near Carluke, Lanarkshire,
Scotland. On a windswept day in August 1999, we visited Thorn, but the road
to Thornmuir resembled the route to Sleeping Beauty's castle and we were
not equipped to hack our way through.
Children
of John PRENTICE are:
+ 2
i. Richard2 PRENTICE, born Abt. 1658.
+ 3
ii. Archibald PRENTICE, born Bet. 1655 - 1659 in Staine, Scotland; died
Abt. 1688.
4
iii. William PRENTICE, born Abt. 1660.
Notes for
William PRENTICE:
According
to William Normand's Black Book: An Account of the Normand, Hill, Prentice
and Russell Families [Christopher Normand
< cnormand@home.3b.co.uk
>, William went to London, married and had a family, but disappeared from
the family records. However, Archibald Prentice of Manchester only identified
two sons: Richard, the oldest son and Archibald, the second son.
Generation
No. 2
2. Richard2 PRENTICE (John1) was born
Abt. 1658.
Notes for
Richard PRENTICE:
"...(Sir
John Prentice's) son who inherited his principles, was amongst the first
to arise against that unconstitutional monarch [Charles I] when his intolerance
and tyranny made resistance a virtue. Richard, the eldest son of John, is
mentioned in Woodrow, as having been heavily fined for attending a conventicle."
[Source: "The Life of Alexander Reid, Written by Himself and Edited by Archibald
Prentice, His Great-Grandson", 3rd ed., Manchester, England, c.1822, rep.1829;
extracted from Archibald Prentice's footnote, p.34.]
Other sources
also identify Richard as his father's heritor, the "Laird of Thorn." Although
no record has been found, he evidently married and had issue.
Child of
Richard PRENTICE is:
+ 5
i. James3 PRENTICE, born Abt. 1675.
3. Archibald2 PRENTICE (John1) was born
Bet. 1655 - 1659 in Staine, Scotland, and died Abt. 1688. He married (1)
Marion FORREST, daughter of John FORREST. He married (2) Marion BELL.
Notes for
Archibald PRENTICE:
Archibald,
"whose son afterward married the daughter of Alexander Reid," was described
as "the second son of John Prentice (the Laird of Stone." (Source: The Life
of Alexander Reid, Written by Himself and Edited by Archibald Prentice His
Great-Grandson, 3rd ed., Manchester, England, c.1822, rep.1829; extracted
from Archibald Prentice's footnote, p.33.)
Laird of
Thorn
He is also
referred to as "Archibald of Thorn, formerly therein, portioner of Stone
Stain, Ston)" in No. 66 of the Index to Particular Register of Sasines
for Sheriffdom of Lanark, Vol. 1, 1618-1720. The references (RS.40) IIIB,
399; (RS.41) I.2, 128; (RS.42) IV 192; V.354; VI. 453; VII.75; IX.393 cover
the period between 1627 and 1693, probably from the time he inherited the
property until his affairs were settled after he died. There are also see
references to both of Archibald's wives, Marion Bell and Marion Forrest.
There is no further information about Marion Bell, presumably the first wife,
but there is some about Marion Forrest.
We are
told by his grandson Archibald Prentice of Manchester that as a Covenanter,
Archibald fought at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge on 22 June 1679. Many lost
their lands if they were even suspected of being at Bothwell, and those who
were actively engaged and would not renounce the principles (of Presbyterianism)
which induced them to take up arms, were fortunate if they escaped the scaffold.
Possibly because his family had been under the protection of the grateful
Sir William Lockhart as mentioned in his father's notes, Archibald Prentice
of Stone was exposed to less persecution than his friend Alexander Reid.
He also managed to ride home from Bothwell without anyone observing him, except
a weaver who lived on Calderwater. During the subsequent years of oppression,
the weaver often used to visit Stone, where he would remark, "Oh, Laird,
it was a lucky thing that naebody saw you at Bothwell but me." "Indeed it
was," the Laird would answer, "but you're a discret body, and will say nothing
about; gang awa, and fill your poke with a meal, for I fancy that's what
ye're came for." The revolution of 1688, which restored the liberties of
an oppressed people, relieved the Laird of Stone from the petty extractions
of the weaver. (Ibid, The Life of Alexander Reid...extracted from Archibald
Prentice's footnote, p.33)
However,
here is some evidence that Archibald Prentice did suffer for his beliefs:
"James Prentice,
Portioner of Stane. George Russell. Became an elder of the established Church
on July 18, 1699. (Probably a tenant in Stane). (Footnote P.28). It will
scarcely be doubted that his father, and the father of James Prentice, are
the persons named in the following passage from Wodrow, 1684. David Russell,
tenant in Stane; Archibald Prentice and John Clelland portioners there; and
John Smith, in the same parish, were apprehended and carried prisoner into
Edinburgh, imprisoned for three months and fined one hundred pounds, for
not raising the hue and cry against these people (Covenanters) when they
passed by their houses in coming from the conventicle at Blackloch. George
Russell’s son David became an elder in 1765, his son George became a Secession
minister at Dalry and later succeeded his father as portioner of Stane. Peter,
another son, took over another farm in Stane."

The children
in Archibald's family have been tentatively identified through the (LDS)
Scottish Church Records, but none of the records included their mother's name.
The children have been assigned to the above mentioned Marion Forrest for
the time being.

She was born 1708, and died Abt. 1754. He married (2) Janet LAWRIE
29 May 1756 in Cramond, Midlothian, Scotland5.
Notes for
John PRENTICE:
William
John Normand's "Black Book: An Account of the Normand, Hill, Prentice and
Russell Families" [Christopher Normand < cnormand@home.3b.co.uk >, (Surrey,
England). has identified this John Prentice as the last "Laird of Thorn,"
who ran through most of his fortune and sold Thorn. John then took to farming
and had more than one farm in the Lothian region and one of which was at
Clermiston, near Corstorphine [now part of Edinburgh], another at Williamston.
He finally settled at Kilrie, Kinghorn, Fife [between Burntisland and Kirkcaldy].
There are
two Sasines (only partly decipherable) in 1743, which provide the evidence
that John Prentice had to sell his estate at Thorn. The first was:
"Sasine
Samuell Sommerville Att Hamilton the 7th day of December 1743
In the
name of God Amen etc... upon ye 3rd day of November 1743 ... compeared personally
upon the ground of the lands underwryt John Gray of Coldstream, Baillee ...

of Zuillhields called the Thorn, with houses, biggings ... and haill of the
pertinents of ye same of old possest by ye deceist John fforest in Thorn
and John fforest there his son..."
The second
Sasine [RS42/14/Part2 Page 368 recto] is an extract (mostly unreadable) which
almost certainly is an acknowledgement by the widow Janet Walker, that she
has received the rent from the lands of Thorn due to her by right of her widow's
pension]
"Att Hamilton
21 day of November 1743
Discharge
Janet Walker to John Prentice
"Be it
known to all men by these presents Me Janet Wlker, relict of the Deceist James
Prentice of Thorn, forasmuchas I the sd Janet Walker [illegible ?my] Lyferent
[illegible ? interest] [furth] of the lands of Thorne ... my ane infeftmant
of the one forethird of free rent dated October 17 1715 and the other January
8 1738 ... my husband's lyfetime ..."
John's tombstone
reads:
"The burying

Prentice, solicitor at law his son, by whom this stone is erected. Interred
here the said John Prentice who died 1779 aged 70; his first wife Jean Wardrop

Notes for
David PRENTICE:
Although
no baptismal register has been found for David, we know from Archibald Prentice's
footnote in "The Life of Alexander Reid" that "Archibald Prentice's son afterward
married the daughter of Alexander Reid" and that this couple must have been
Archibald Prentice's parents. Is David the son of an Archibald? No christening
record available for him, but there is one for a Thomas Prentice, son of
Archibald, who was baptized 19 Oct 1701 in Cambusnethan (OPR #1375155).
According
to information provided by Sheila Scott in her book "The Upper Ward of Lanarkshire
Monumental Inscriptions Pre-1855," p.130, Robbie Burns spent a night at Covington
Mains on his way to Edinburgh Nov 1786.

32. George5 PRENTICE (John4, James3,
Richard2, John1) was born 11 Apr 175729,
and died 18 Oct 184129. He married Isabella BOOTH
03 Sep 1796 in Williamston, Mid-Calder District, Scotland30,
daughter of James BOOTH and Magdalene GRAY. She died 1828.
Notes for
George PRENTICE:
George Prentice,
oldest son of John Prentice and Janet Lowrie or Lawrie, born 11 April 1757,
baptised 26 April 1757, at Cramond, Mid Lothian, followed his father as a
Farmer. He farmed first at Clermiston, near Corstorphine, then at Williamston,
Mid-Calder, Midlothian, then took over from his father at Kilrie, Kinghorn,
Fife. He married, after banns on 3 September 1796, at Williamston, Mid-Calder,
Isabella (or Isabel) Booth, daughter of James Booth and Magdalene Gray.
George's
will, dated 8 November 1837, reveals that he had earlier passed on:
- the tenancy
of Kilrie Farm and South Glass Farm to his eldest son, James,
- Ł1200
[Ł58,352, today] to his second son, John,
- the tenancy
of Bankhead and Broomend Farms to his third son, George,
- Ł252

Ł1,000, later [Ł12,253 and Ł48,626, respectively, today],
- Ł1200
[Ł58,352, today] to his daughter, Janet,
and that
the residue of his estate was to be shared equally between 5 of his children,
Curiously, his youngest daughter, Rachel, is not mentioned, at all in his
Will. [Source: Christopher Normand's "Black Book."]

"James became
a Farmer at Bankhead of Raith, Abbotshall, Fife, and later took over the farm
at Kilrie, Kinghorn, Fife, where we found him in the 1851 Census, living,
unmarried, with 2 female servants and a Cow Boy living in. The farm was apparently
380 acres in extent, and he employed 22 labourers. At the 1861 Census, he
was still living, aged 64, at Bankhead (9 rooms) (now shown as 400 acres
in extent), employing 10 men, 2 women and 3 boys, with 3 servants living in;
his neice, Isabella (aged 23) was staying with him. He died, unmarried,
aged 69, 3 June 1866, from gangrene of the foot caused by picking a corn
to the quick; the death was reported by his brother, George Prentice. He
was buried in the Old Churchyard, Kinghorn, Fife. His Will (valued @ Ł17,478

Russell Prentice, also bequeathing Ł1,000 each to each of his other nephews

Abt. 23 Jun 1734 in Shotts, Lanark, Scotland44, and died
Abt. 13 Jun 1813. He married (1) Margaret PRENTICE. She was born
1743, and died Abt. 14 Jul 1776. He married (2) Helen STODART 19
Mar 1780 in Covington, Lanark, Scotland45, daughter of John
STODART and Helen LIND. She was born 18 Oct 1757 in Walston, Lanark, Scotland,
and died 25 Aug 1836 in Lanark, Lanark, Scotland46.
Notes for
Archibald "Bauldy" PRENTICE:
Archibald
Prentice was a "Farmer of Covington Mains, near Biggar, in Lanarkshire, whom
(Robbie) Burns visited on 27th November 1786, enroute for Edinburgh. There
was 'a most agreeable little party in the evening.' Burns stayed the night
at Hillhead Farm, with Mr and Mrs Stodhart--described by Burns as 'a glorious
good fellow with a still more glorious wife'--and Prentice joined them for
breakfast on the
28th. Prentice
was an admirer of the poet, and subscribed for twenty copies of the first
Edinburgh Editon of his Poems.
Other sources
indicate that all the farmers of the district had read the Kilmanock Edition
of Burns' poetry and they had all been asked to meet at Covington for a late
dinner. The signal for Burns' arrival
had been
a white sheet attached to a pitchfork, put on top of a corn stack in the centre
of the barnyard.
Archibald
Jr. also gave this account of the famous poet's reception in Covington: "My
father's stackyard was seen from every house in the Parish. (When) Burns
arrived the flag was hoisted, and as instantly the farmers were seen converging
at the meeting point. A glorious evening or rather night, which gathered
something from the morning and the conversation of the poet confirmed and
increased the admiration caused by his writings. On the following morning,
he breakfasted with a large party at the farmhouse tenanted by James Stodart
brother to the Stodart pianoforte makers of London."
James Stodart's
son James (also) recalled how he as a boy on his way to school paused and
noted the pony tethered and waiting for the Poet. The stalwart Bauldy Prentice
had come out of the farmhouse and ordered him and others to hold the stirrup.
"You will boast of it until your dying day." The boys said "We'll be late
and we're feared of the Maister." (But) the boys took courage as Prentice
was six foot three and the Maister was just ordinary. James Jr. in his eighties
said: "I think I am prouder of that forenoon frae the school than 'a the
days I was inmit." (Extracts from James Mackay's "Burns.")
In a letter
dated 29th November 1786, to George Reid, who lent Burns a pony to ride to
Edinburgh, the poet described Prentice: "For Mr Prentice, no words can do
him justice. Sound sterling sense and plain
warm hospitality
are truly his." (Source: The Burns Encyclopedia at: http://www.robertburns.org/encyclopedia)
Other sources
describe "Bauldy" as 6' 3" tall. We visited Covington in Aug. 1999 and found
the old Prentice house much the same, although the 18th century farmhouse
has been well maintained. People still remember the Lindsays who occupied
the house after the Prentices. Covington Mains shares some land with the
remains of an ancient, fortified house. An adjacent church has recently been
sold, but it is still possible to locate the grave of Archibald Prentice
and Agnes Reid with the help of Sheila Scott's "Monumental Inscriptions,"
although the raised and flattened tombstone is disfigured with moss. The
road next to Covington Mains winds up to Hillead Farm, a snarl of grey-stoned
buildings with a panoramic view. A plaque commemorating Robbie Burns' visit
is at the foot of this road.
Notes for
Helen STODART:
Helen was
probably the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stodhart of Hillend Farm, who are described
by Robert Burns "as a glorious good fellow with a still more glorious wife"
after he spent the night of 27 Nov 1786 with them.

Notes for
William HILSTON:
Name also
spelled Hillstone(s). William's ancestors may have originated in Staine (Stane),
a place which is also associated with his wife's Prentice ancestors. The
"Commissariot Record of Glasgow Register of Testaments, 1547-1800" records
"Fairholme, Jonet, spouse to Robert Hilstoun, in Stane, par. of Cambusneethan
07 Jan 1609."
Also, No.
66 of "Index to Particular Register of Sasines for Sheriffdom of Lanark"
indicates John (Hilston) of Staine, "formerly portioner there, son of Archibald
H. there, (RS.40 IVA.215; (RS.41) II.55, (RS.42) I.191 and his spouse Jean
Christie were located in Staine between 1631 and 1663. This source also
indicates that Archibald Hilston and his spouse Christian Cleland and Robert,
son of John Hilston were in Staine at this time.
However,
there is still a large gap to be bridged between these Hilstons and William
Hilston, born circa 1730 in Covington.
Descendant
Jack Gordon has written: "William moved from Covington to Lesmahagow, where
he was recorded as a schoolmaster from 1764-1804, living in the old town of
Abbey Green. The move should have been financially advantageous, because
the Imperial /Gazetteer gives the salaries (plus fees etc.) of the parochial
schoolmasters as Ł44 in Covington and Ł101.4s.4 ˝d. in Lesmahagow in the
1850s (and a similar ratio presumably obtained a century before).
Bruce Lenman
makes the point (in his book on Integration & Enlightenment: 1746-1832)
that, in the mid-18th century, Scotland's landowners had to bear the cost
of the parochial schools, present in virtually every lowland parish, and
this explains the miserable pay of the teachers - who usually doubled up
as session clerk (William Hilston certainly did so in Lesmahagow for several
years).
The Established
Kirk had authority over the schools, which were subject to visitations by
the local presbytery, and the schools provided good, cheap elementary education
for all classes and both sexes, as well as preparing promising lads for
University. Lenman contends that the Lowlands probably had higher literacy
levels at that time than most of England (outside London) and most continental
countries."

Notes for
David A. M. HILSTON:
Descendant
Jack Gordon reports: "In the "Cranmer Tree" David is recorded as "Master
of Arts, Glasgow University". There is also a 1784 date under David's name
but no indication of what event this refers to. However, the Glasgow University
Archivist confirmed that David Hilston matriculated in 1777, in Prof Young's
class and graduated MA in 1784. He is the only Hilston in the Glasgow University
archives, and there is no record of him winning any prizes. The archivist
commented that David was a student for an unusually long time and speculated
that this might have been because he was ill, or he had to take time off
and earn money to complete his studies, or he failed first time around.
It was quite common in 18th century Scotland for students to fail to complete
a degree for reasons other than lack of ability: only those intending to
pursue careers in the Church, Law or Medicine required a degree, and many
others were satisfied with a year or two of university study.
Several subsequent
ancestors (e.g. Gordons and Hallidays, although not Hilstons) attended Glasgow
University, but in the neo-gothic buildings at Gilmorehill; in the 18th
century it was located in the High Street."
David was
buried with his parents at age 36. Lesmahagow Death Records describe him
as a Student of Divinity.

67. George6 PRENTICE (George5, John4,
James3, Richard2, John1) was born 30 Jun
1805, and died 16 May 1871 in Strathore, Scotland. He married Jane Simpson
RUSSELL 18 Jun 1833 in Kinghorn and Auchtertool, Fife, Scotland72.
She was born 1811, and died 07 Jun 1849 in Pitteadie, Kinghorn, Fife, Scotland.
Notes for
George PRENTICE:
George Prentice
was a Farmer, at Pitteadie, Kinghorn, and proprietor of Strathore. We have
not found this family in the 1841 Census. In the record of the birth and
baptism of his daughter, Ellen, in 1844, he was described as a Corn Merchant,
living in Kirkcaldy, so it is possible that he returned to farming later
than we first believed. In 1851 Pitteadie House was empty. At the 1861 Census,
he was living, aged 56, at South Pitteadie House (11 rooms), Kinghorn, Fife,
with his son, George (22) and his daughter, Mary (26). At the 1871 Census,
he was described as a Farmer of 300 Scotch acres, employing a ploughman, 10
labourers, 15 women and 2 boys; with him, then, at South Pitteadie House,
Kinghorn, were his son, Robert, aged 31, and his daughter, Isabella, aged
33, then widowed. South Pitteadie House had 11 rooms, according to the census
record. He survived his wife for 22 years, and died, aged 66, 16 May 1871,
at Strathore. His Will, dated 11 February 1867, left all his property, to
his son, George Prentice, and divided the residue equally among all his children.
The house at Pitteadie was left to his widowed daughter, Isabella for her
lifetime (provided she did not re-marry). There were also references to
legacies to his wife's mother from the estate of her father, of that of William
Moffat, a merchant in Kirkcaldy, and of the Rev. David Guild, Minister of
Auchtertool. [Source: Christopher Normand's "Black Book."]

Mary Russell PRENTICE:
Mary Russell
Prentice [N.a] [Chart 19B] (‡), born 26 August 1834, baptised 17 November
1834, at Kinghorn, Fife. She was absent from Kinghorn at the Censuses of
1841 and 1851 (as were her parents). At the 1861 Census, she was living,
aged 26, with her widowed father and brother, George, at South Pitteadie
House, Kinghorn. She married, 5 November 1862, at Kinghorn, Fife, John Harvey,
a Wine Merchant, and Senior Partner of John Harvey & Sons, which later
became known as Harveys of Bristol (the famous Sherry blenders and Wine Merchants).
122
ii. Isabella PRENTICE, born 09 Aug 1837.
Notes for
Isabella PRENTICE:
Isabella
Prentice, born 9 August 1837, baptised 18 September 1837, at Kirkcaldy, Fife.
She was absent from Kinghorn at the Censuses of 1841 and 1851 (as were her
parents). At the 1861 Census she was visiting her uncle, James, at Bankhead
of Rait, Abbotshall, Fife. She married, 12 September 1865, at Kinghorn,
Fife, Walter Ferguson Anderson, son of George Anderson, of Ferry Bank, and
Rachel Inglis.
There was
no issue of this marriage, as she was widowed after only 4 years. At the
1871 Census, she was living, widowed, aged 33, with her father, and brother,
Robert, at South Pitteadie House, Kinghorn, Fife. In her father's Will,
when he died in 1871, Isabella (Prentice) Anderson was then widowed, and
she was left Pitteadie, Kinghorn, Fife, "so long as she remained a widow"
- if she remarried, the property would revert to her brother George Prentice
(Probate value of the property was Ł11,074 5/6 [Ł511,167, today]) (in the
event, she does not appear, after all to have lived at Pitteadie for any
length of time). At the 1881 Census, she was living, widowed, aged 43, at
34 Abercromby Place, Edinburgh, and had a Cook and House Table Maid living
in. She had 2 visitors, her niece, Annie Harvey (aged 15) and her cousin,
Isabella Davidson, staying. She did not remarry, and she died, aged 86, of
bronchial pneumonia, 26 January 1924, at 12 Lynedoch Place, Edinburgh, buried
in the Old Churchyard, Kirkcaldy. Her death was reported by her nephew,
George P Normand. Her Will (Probated @Ł5806 14/10 [Ł203,464, today]) (Trustees
James Edmonston Aytoun (q.v., above), Robert Emile Shepherd Prentice (q.v.,
below) and George Prentice Normand, WS) made a number of specific bequests,
naming:
- Ł500 [Ł19,330,
today] to be shared by the children of her "late nephew and godson", John
George ("Harry") Harvey
- Ł300 [Ł10,500,
today] to her "niece and namesake" Margaret Isabella Harvey
- Ł500 to
her James Edmonstone Aytoun
- Ł1600
[Ł62,000, today] to Daisy Anderson living in New Orleans, USA (not identified
- a relative of her late husband's?)
- her cook
(and any other servant employed when she died)
- her home
at Lynedoch Place, Edinburgh (and the residue of her estate) to her nephew,
Robert Emile Shepherd Prentice
- the principal
of her father's trust to the children of her late brother, George Prentice
of Strathore.

iv. Robert Russell PRENTICE, born 05 Jan 1840. He married (1) Emily Dundas
Murray SHEPHERD Abt. 187176. He married (2) Jane Montgomery
LANG Abt. 187576.
Notes for
Robert Russell PRENTICE:
Robert was
absent from Kinghorn at the Censuses of 1841 and 1851 (as were his parents).
He was not at the family home at the 1861 Census (when he would have been
aged 21). He was living with his uncle, James Prentice, at Bankhead of Raith,
in 1866, when the latter made his Will (in which he was sole inheritor of
the estate of his uncle), but was back with his father, at the 1871 Census,
at South Pitteadie.. He was a Farmer for most of his life, and married twice:
- to Emily
Dundas Murray Shepherd, in 1871
- to Jane
Montgomerie Lang, in 1875
Robert was
a farmer for much of his life, but he retired to live at 6 Mayfield Terrace,
Edinburgh (he was there at the time of his sister, Ellen (Prentice) Normand's
death, in 1910). For a while (during the 1860s, it would appear that he lived
with his uncle, James Prentice, at Bankhead of Rait, Abbotshall, near Kirkcaldy
(and later inherited this farm). .At the 1871 Census, he was living, aged
31, with his widowed father, and widowed sister, Isabella, at South Pitteadie
House, Kinghorn, Fife, and was described as a Farmer. He soon moved into
Skeddaway, Dysart, where he farmed (it is not clear whether he ever farmed
at Bankhead of Rait, however). He married twice, firstly, 25 April 1871,
at Gracemount Villas, Burntisland, Fife, to Emily Dundas Murray Shepherd,
daughter of James Shepherd, a Merchant, and Mary Murray.
Emily Dundas
Murray Shepherd was born about 1846*, as she was 25 when she married (both
parents had died by then), living at 6 Gracemount Villas, Burntisland. She
appears to have had 2 brothers, Thomas and Arthur, who were witnesses at the
marriage. She died 6 days after the birth of her son, aged 27, from Scarlet
Fever, 23 February 1872, at Skeddaway, Dysart, Fife.
[Note: There
appears to have been an epidemic of fevers in the Dysart area in 1872, as
there were a large number of deaths from Small Pox, Scarlet Fever, Typhoid,
and, of course, Pthisis]
[Note: *
No trace can be found of her birth 1844-1848 in the Index of births in the
parish records of Scotland, so it is possible she was born in England - or
abroad?] They had one son:
- Robert
Emile Dundas Murray Shepherd Prentice [O.6] [Chart 19C] (‡), born 17 February
1872, at Skeddaway, Dysart, Fife. At the 1881 Census, he was at Cargilfield
Preparatory School, Trinity Road, Edinburgh, aged 9, together with his cousins,
James Normand Normand and George Herbert Normand. He then went to Loretto
School, Musselburgh, Midlothian. He has not been found in Scotland at the
1891 Census, aged 19, when he may have been at the Royal Military College.
He was commissioned in the Highland Light Infantry (2nd Lt 19 October 1892,
Lt 2 August 1895, Adjutant, HLI, 9 June 1900, Captain 1 August 1901, Brevet
Major 22 August 1901). He served in the Indian Frontier Campaigns (Malakand
Field Force) in 1897-8 (Medal with clasp). He then held several staff appointments,
including Quarter Master General of the East Anglian Territorial Division,
until 1909, when he re-joined the 2nd Battalion, HLI. At the outbreak of
the 1st World War he was commanding "C" Company, and went to France, leaving
England on 13 August 1914. He soon became 2nd in Command of the Battalion
during the first months of the fighting, and in February 1915 took over command.
In July 1915, he was promoted to Temporary Brigadier General and given command
of the 188th Infantry Brigade, which was one of the Brigades of the Naval
Division, which fought with distinction at the battles of Beaumont Hamel,
Arras and Poelcappelli. He was wounded, mentioned in Despatches five times,
and was awarded the DSO. (gazetted 3 June 1916). In January 1918, he left
France to become GOC Catterick Reserve Centre. He was promoted to the rank
of Lieutenant Colonel, 4 November 1919, and commanding his Regiment, from
11 November 1919, until 1923. From 1924, he commanded the East Lancashire
and Border Territorial Brigade, at Windermere, Cumberland (when he was a
residual beneficiary of the Will of his aunt, Jane (Prentice) Patrick).
He was also awarded the CMG in 1918 and CB in 1919. He retired from the
Army in 1928, with the rank of Brigadier General. In addition to his distinguished
career as a soldier, he was also a great sportsman, a first-class shot, unusually
keen angler, and a very fair cricketer. He married, 15 June 1900 (in India?),
Violet Rosabella Craigie, daughter of Colonel John Harry Smith Craigie, and
Rosabelle Hamilton

v. Jane PRENTICE, born 27 Feb 1841. She married John Gavin Fullerton
PATRICK 15 Feb 1870 in Alma HOtel, 1712 Princess St., Edinburgh, Scotland76.
Notes for
Jane PRENTICE:
Jane, aged
29, married 15 February 1870, at Alma Hotel, 1712 Princes Street, Edinburgh,
John Gavin Fullerton Patrick, son of John Suddon Patrick, a Landowner, and
Robina Jane Lee.
John Suddon
Patrick and Robina Jane Lee were married, 23 March 1836, at Beith, Ayrshire.
They had a family of 5 children, 4 sons and a daughter, of whom:
- John Gavin
Fullerton Patrick, (‡) the third son, was baptised, 28 June 1840, at Beith,
Ayrshire. He was a Civil Engineer, and later, when he inherited Grangehill,
Beith, Ayrshire, he was described as having "income from land". He married
at aged 39. He died, aged 80, from Jaundice, 24 August 1920, at Bogie House,
Kirkcaldy, Fife. His Will (after providing for his widow, left the bulk
estate to William Ralston Patrick of Royhead (his nephew?), with bequests
for his brothers-in-law, George Prentice, of Strathore, and Robert Russell
Prentice, of Whorlawhill, ....... (?), and the residue to John Fullerton
Patrick (a nephew?) and his nephews, Robert Davidson and George Prentice
Davidson; his nephew-in-law, Vero Kenbal was sole Trustee.
We have
found them in the 1881 and 1891 Censuses, living at Grangehill Mansion, Beith,
Ayrshire (18 rooms). They had a staff of a Cook, Tablemaid and Housemaid.
At the 1901 Census, they were living at "The Cairnies", Methven, Perthshire
(24 rooms) (aged 61 and 60, respectively); they had a staff of a Cook, Tablemaid
and Housemaid. There was no issue of this marriage. She died, widowed, aged
82, 7 December 1925, at 6 Lynedock Place, Edinburgh (a close neighbour of
her sister, Isabella (Prentice) Anderson); her nephew George Prentice Normand
reported the death. Her Will left her house and contents to her niece, Mary
Prentice; her nephew, George Prentice Normand, received Ł4,600 [Ł164,149,
today]; her nephew, Wilfrid Guild Normand, was left Ł1,000 [Ł35,684, today];
her sister-in law, Jane Suddon Patrick, of 24 Coates Gardens, Edinburgh,
received Ł500 [Ł17,842, today]; her cousin (by marriage), Catherine Cochrane
Patrick, of Ladyland, Beith, Ayr, was left Ł500; her niece, Margaret Isabella
Harvey, received Ł1,000, her nephew (by marriage, Vero Kemball, received
Ł3,000 [Ł107,052, today]; her nephew, Colonel Emily Russell Shepherd Prentice,
received Ł1,500 [Ł53,526, today]; Christina Lang, of Aros (presumably a relation
of her brother's (Robert Russell Prentice) wife) was left Ł500. [Source:

who are still remembered in Covington to this day.

The wills
of Hugh and Janet’s daughter Mary, their daughter-in-law Mary Forest, and
son-in-law James Ballantyne, are available to read through Scotland’ People.
They show that this was a rich family. James Ballantyne’s will reveals that
John Lindsay, who was childless and died in 1860, left Ł2000 to each of his
5 siblings as well as provision for his wife. By the time his wife died in
1891 she had over Ł11000, much of it in railway stock, and much in various
banks such as Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, Commercial Bank
of Australia, and the Union Loan and Savings Company Toronto. Mary Lindsay,
Hugh and Janet’s unmarried youngest daughter, died in 1892 leaving between
Ł7000 and Ł8000, mostly in railway stock.

81. David6 PRENTICE (Archibald "Bauldy"5,
David4, Archibald3, Archibald2, John1)
was born Apr 178183. He married Margaret ___.
Notes for
David PRENTICE:
A copy
of a lease, dated 21 April 1801, for a field at High Hill (Windmill),Carluke,
known as "Officer's Acre" indicates that David was a millwright in Covington.
David immigrated
to America in 1805 and established an iron foundry in Louisville, Kentucky
in 1817 with Thomas Bakewell which was called the "Eagle Works." According
to his brother Archibald's book, "A Tour in the United States," David was
also an engineer in Philadelphia and "afterwards the Fulton of the great
western river navigation."
He was
also a genius. It is said that he was the first one to place a steamboat
on the Mississippi River. The U.S. government offered a reward for the best
mechanical contrivance to remove snags or sawyers. He nearly completed a
steam boat, connected by a strong beam to push them over down stream, when
he died. His ideas and plans were taken up by another, who received the award.
His will, probated 2 Oct 1826, names his wife Margaret and their children.

Notes for
John PRENTICE:
According
to Binney's book, John sold his father's farm [Meadowflat] and immigrated
to Louisville, Kentucky. Like his brother David, he engaged in works to improve
the navigation of the river. Although there is some discrepancy in his age,
he is likely the John Prentice born circa 1794 who appears in the 1850 Louisville,
Kentucky census with David Prentice, a clerk, born circa 1818 in Scotland
and Thomas Prentice, a sadler, born circ 1825 in Scotland.
At a later
date, John and wife and their married daughter, a Mrs. Watson and her family,
went to Union Farms, Red River County or Guest Prairie, Cranksville, Texas.

Notes for
Archibald PRENTICE:
After a
brief period at school, Archibald Prentice was apprenticed at the age of
12 to a baker in Edinburgh, but the occupation wasn’t congenial. He was in
the following year (1805) apprenticed to a woollen-draper in the Lawnmarket
in Edinburgh. Here he remained for three years before going to Glasgow as
a warehouse clerk for Thomas Grahame, a textile manufacturer, who was also
the brother of James Grahame the poet. Archibald impressed this employer
and in 1815, Thomas Grahame made him a partner and sent him to represent
the business in Manchester, England.
In Manchester,
Archibald became friends with local social reformers such as John Edward
Taylor, John Shuttleworth, Absalom Watkin, Joseph Brotherton, William Cowdray,
Thomas Potter and Richard Potter. The group was strongly influenced by the
ideas of Jeremy Bentham and Joseph Priestley. These businessmen objected
to a system that denied important industrial towns and cities representation
in the House of Commons. The men met in the back room of John Potter's house
which became known as Potter's Planning Parlour.
After the
Peterloo Massacre, Archibald became a regular contributor to local newspapers,
including the Manchester Guardian. However, he purchased his own newspaper
the Manchester Gazette in 1824 because he did not believe the Guardian was
radical enough. Prentice edited the Manchester Gazette until 1828 when bankruptcy
forced him to close the newspaper. Later that year his radical friends put
up the money for a newspaper that he called the Manchester Times. In his
newspapers, Archibald advocated parliamentary reform, religious toleration
and free trade. The Manchester Times did well until 1830 when sales began
to decline. Then on July 14, 1931, an action for libel was brought against
him by Captain Grimshaw, of whom he had said that he gave indecent toasts
at public dinners. In the indictment, Archibald was styled "a labourer" and
in his defence, which he conducted himself, he said that he gloried in being
"a labourer in the field of parliamentary reform." He was acquitted and was
presented with a silver snuff box "by one hundred of his fellow labourers."
But people still objected to Archibald's "schoolmaster tone" and also he
was unwilling to include many stories on non-political issues.
In 1835
Archibald Prentice joined Joseph Hume and Francis Place to form the Anti-Corn
Law Association and on 24 Sep 1838, he induced several prominent Manchester
merchants to meet him at the York Hotel and the result of their meeting was
the foundation of the Anti-Corn Law League.
For the
next eight years, he devoted himself as editor and lecturer to the propagation
of free-trade principles, sacrificing both his health and the prospect of
worldly wealth. However, sales of the Manchester Times remained poor and
when a rival radical newspaper, the Manchester Guardian, appeared in 1846,
Archibald found that he could no longer make a profit from the venture. In
1847 he agreed to sell his business to the owners of the Manchester Examiner.
After leaving
newspaper publishing, Archibald found work at the Manchester Gas Office.
However, he continued to write and had several books published including:
"Tour of the United States" (1848), a book which he sold cheaply in order
to promote immigration; "Historical Sketches and Personal Reminiscences of
Manchester" (1851) and "History of the Anti-Corn Law League" (1853). Apparently,
he had also edited his great-grandfather's book as early as 1822: "The Life
of Alexander Reid, a Scottish Covenanter." (The source of some of the above
information was an Internet website at: http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/PRprentice.htm)
According
to Binney, Archibald also published another book in 1851 which was a second
edition of historical sketches and personal collections of Manchester "dedicated
to his cousins, Elizabeth, Agnes and Beatrice Prentice of Castle Park, Lanark,
Scotland, great-granddaughters of Archibald Prentice and Alexander Reid who
fought at "Bothwell Brig" 1649, and grand-nieces of James Thompson,
the author
of the "Seasons" etc., and sisters of David Prentice, founder and editor
of the "Glasgow Chronicle."
There is
also a picture of Archibald and one of his articles at this website, which
was located by my cousin, Riley Crawford -Phillips. According to Riley, Archibald's
personal papers became the property of his niece, Mrs Emily Dunlop of Northwich,
Cheshire, England:

91. Christian6 HILSTON (Mary5 PRENTICE,
David4, Archibald3, Archibald2, John1)
was born 1765 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, and died Bef. 1851. She
married James BROWN 26 Apr 1787 in Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire, Scotland,
son of James BROWN and Isabel ALSTON. He was born Abt. 1764 in Lanark, Scotland,
and died Bef. 1841.
More About
Christian HILSTON:
Census:

Cristian is living with her parents.
Christened:
10 Jul 1765, Lesmahagow, Lanark, Scotland. Recorded as: "Christian daughter
of William Hillstones, schoolmaster in Lesmahagow and Mary Prentice."94,95
Christian,
aged 75 is presumably widowed and living at Mutton Hall in Lesmahagow (near
Kerse) with her son Wm Brown's family during the 1841 Census.
Notes for
James BROWN:
James' age
was originally estimated from the age of his wife Christian Hilston, assuming
that he was only slightly older, but there is always the possibility that
this was a second marriage.
His parentage
is uncertain, but the fact that his granddaughter Christian Brown married
her second cousin William Gilfillan [whose mother's maiden name was Jamieson]
indicates that both parties shared a common grandparent and this ancestor
could have beeny Agnes Brown who married James Jamison.
I have
also considered the possibility that James' grandparents were James Brown
of Netherfauldhouse who married Catherin Steell of Middleholm 31.3.1722, probably
when they were in their early twenties. Catherine's father may have been
Thomas Steel who is recorded as the owner of Middleholm during the 1695 Poll
Tax of Lesmahagow; his wife is also named. Catherine's brother may have been
John Steel, identified as the "son of Thomas S. of Midleholm," in "Index
to Particular Register of Sasines for Sheriffdom of Lanark," (RS.42) XII.
482, probably between 1709-1719. John Steel married Janet Hamilton. A
closer (but not exhaustive) perusal of the parish registers for Lesmahagow
has identified a couple of their children born at Middleholm: Margaret, born
May 25, baptized June 5, 1722 and Thomas, baptized 31 Dec 1723.
If the
mother's name is indicated, a closer perusal of the parish registers may also
reveal some of James Brown's and Catherine Steel's children. Assuming James
and Catherine Brown had children who survived to adulthood between 1722 and
1750, there is evidence of a second generation of Browns having children
at Middleholm. John Brown and Jean Steel christened a daughter, Clementina
30 March 1781, possibly a last born child, so there may have been Brown children
born at Middleholm in the 1760s and the 1770s. Clementina died in 1787.

If he is
the David who married Mary Craig, he married late. David and Mary may have
had least three daughters: Beatrice Bell Finlayson, Elizabeth Ledward and
Marion* Ledward who were identified as such when they erected a monument
to their grandparents and their parents in St. Kentigern's Churchyard, Lanark.
David was
also supposed to be the grand-nephew of James Thomson, a famous poet, who
wrote the words for "Rule Brittanica," but unfortunately there is very little
biographical information available about him.
*Marion
was referred to as "Mary Craig Prentice" on her marriage register to Ralph
Worthington Ledward, so I am assuming she was the same person. There is also
a birth register identifying Mary Craig Prentice as the daughter of David
Prentice and Mary Craig.
